APPLICATION TECHNOLOGY Alloys

A286 Alloy. A286 is an austenitic iron base alloy that has been used for years in aircraft engine applications. Its use for industrial gas turbines started about 1965, when technological advances made the production of sound ingots sufficient in size to produce these wheels possible. [Pg.427]

The excellent resistance of platinum, rhodium and iridium to oxidation at high temperatures finds numerous applications in technology, in particular in the form of platinum-based alloys. Osmium and ruthenium form volatile oxides which may be isolated (OSO4 and RujOj), and they are not widely used. [Pg.933]

The process is generally limited to certain plastics such as TP polyester and polyester based alloys due to the availability of dye technology from the textile industry. However, new dyes are under development and the application of the process to more plastics is anticipated. [Pg.545]

The number of such examples, however, is not high. In many other examples of advanced-performance materials, such as DuPont s Kevlar and Allied Signal s SPECTRA, the volume applications associated with system-for-system substitution has not yet occurred at a level necessary to pay back the development and commercialization costs already expended. High-performance ceramics is another area in which the early promise has yet to materialize. The consequences of Eckstut s life-cycle dynamics have been overcapacity and severe rationalization in high-performance carbon fiber businesses, some specialty alloy activities, and high-performance polymer composites. Thus, with critical technologies that involve advanced-performance materials, we need to better understand how to exploit their value in a commercially viable way. [Pg.43]

Most published work has focused on the deposition of Ni, Co, and NiCo alloys from hypophosphite electrolytes [14], and this part of the review will deal primarily with these alloys. Other Co alloys studied include CoZnP [15, 16], the recording characteristics of which were described by Soraya [17] CoSnP [18], which is reported to have enhanced corrosion resistance and the rhenium and manganese alloys used for vertical recording, discussed below. Other reductants, such as hydrazine [19], dimethylamine borane [20-22], pyridine borane [23], and borohydride [24, 25], can be used for the chemical deposition of nickel and cobalt, but to date there has been no significant application of these to the technology of magnetic media. [Pg.254]
