The JME Editor is a Java program which allows one to draw, edit, and display molecules and reactions directly within a web page and may also be used as an application in a stand-alone mode. The editor was originally developed for use in an in-house web-based chemoinformatics system but because of many requests it was released to the public. The JME currently is probably the most popular molecule entry system written in Java. Internet sites that use the JME applet include several structure databases, property prediction services, various chemoinformatics tools (such as for generation of 3D structures or molecular orbital visualization), and interactive sites focused on chemistry education [209]. [Pg.144]

MMl, MM2, MM3, and MM4 are general-purpose organic force fields. There have been many variants of the original methods, particularly MM2. MMl is seldom used since the newer versions show measurable improvements. The MM3 method is probably one of the most accurate ways of modeling hydrocarbons. At the time of this book s publication, the MM4 method was still too new to allow any broad generalization about the results. However, the initial published results are encouraging. These are some of the most widely used force fields due to the accuracy of representation of organic molecules. MMX and MM+ are variations on MM2. These force fields use five to six valence terms, one of which is an electrostatic term and one to nine cross terms. [Pg.55]

In more recent publications the analytical standards have been raised considerably (HPLC, H-NMR, CD R.F. Nutt, 1980), and one may predict that in the near future it will be possible to characterize fully synthetic oligopeptides of moderate size. [Pg.238]

The existing models for emitting x-ray fluorescence intensity of elemental analytical lines from heterogeneous samples are limited in practical applications, because in most publications the relations between the fluorescence intensity of analytical lines elements and the properties of powder materials were not completely studied. For example, particles distribution of components within narrow layer of irradiator which emitted x-ray fluorescence intensity of elements might be in disagreement with particles distribution of components within whole sample. [Pg.462]

Once a toller has been selected and any required preliminary confidentiality protection is in place, the client typically shares more detailed information. The toller can then make an informed decision about the economic, technical, and safety aspects involved in bidding the work. If the two parties decide the project will be mutually beneficial, agreements and obligations are negotiated and then formalized in a written contract. Both parties—the client and the toller—have roles in fulfilling the contract and in carrying out their responsibilities to the workers and the public. The purpose of the written contract is to clarify and document those roles and responsibilities to effectively execute, maintain and eventually terminate the project. [Pg.47]

Consequence Phase 3 Develop Detailed Quantitative Estimate of the impacts of the Accident Scenarios. Sometimes an accident scenario is not understood enough to make risk-based decisions without having a more quantitative estimation of the effects. Quantitative consequence analysis will vary according to the hazards of interest (e.g., toxic, flammable, or reactive materials), specific accident scenarios (e.g., releases, runaway reactions, fires, or explosions), and consequence type of interest (e.g., onsite impacts, offsite impacts, environmental releases). The general technique is to model release rates/quantities, dispersion of released materials, fires, and explosions, and then estimate the effects of these events on employees, the public, the facility, neighboring facilities, and the environment. [Pg.36]

The potential of LA-based techniques for depth profiling of coated and multilayer samples have been exemplified in recent publications. The depth profiling of the zinc-coated steels by LIBS has been demonstrated [4.242]. An XeCl excimer laser with 28 ns pulse duration and variable pulse energy was used for ablation. The emission of the laser plume was monitored by use of a Czerny-Turner grating spectrometer with a CCD two-dimensional detector. The dependence of the intensities of the Zn and Fe lines on the number of laser shots applied to the same spot was measured and the depth profile of Zn coating was constructed by using the estimated ablation rate per laser shot. To obtain the true Zn-Fe profile the measured intensities of both analytes were normalized to the sum of the line intensities. The LIBS profile thus obtained correlated very well with the GD-OES profile of the same sample. Both profiles are shown in Fig. 4.40. The ablation rate of approximately 8 nm shot ... [Pg.235]

After the inherent hazards are reduced, layers of protection are frequently used to protect the receptors of the hazard—the public, the environment, workers, other processes, or the process itself (Figure 1.1). In the strictest sense, one could argue that the definition of inherently safer applies only to elimination or reduction of the hazard. In the broad sense, the strength of a layer of protection can be improved by features that are permanent and inseparable from that layer. Thus, layers of protection can be classified into three categories, listed in decreasing order of reliability passive, active, and procedural. A passive layer of protection can be described as inherently safer than an active... [Pg.2]

The philosophy of public health protection used by the AEC and pursued ever since, is the use of multiple independent barriers, each a significant shield for the public. The last barrier involves the removal of people from the area over which the radioactive plume is expected to pass, interdiction of food supplies and the use of prophylaxis to reduce the iodine dose. Blood... [Pg.15]

Protect Workers and the Public. The reasons may not be eniirely altruistic because worker injury is detrimental to production. Furthermore, we are the workers and wish a safe working environment free of immediate or latent injury. This requires detailed analysis of the process systems to estimate frequency of failure and the consequences that could result. Generally if the workers are safe, the public is safe. [Pg.294]

The primary motivation of PSAs is to assess the risk of the plant to the public. The immediate purpose of the RSS was to support the Price-Anderson hearings on liability insurance (i.e., assess the financial exposure of a nuclear power reactor operator) a purpose which, even today, is beyond PSA technology. However, PSA is sufficiently precise to provide relative risk comparisons of reactor designs and sites. These uses of PSA were presented at the Indian Point hearings, and in defense of Shoreham. The PSAs for the high-population-zone plants (Limerick, Zion, and Indian Point) were prepared to show that specific features of these plants compensate for the higher population density relative to plants studied in the RSS. [Pg.383]

It was never discovered who installed this unauthorized substandard drain point. An attempt had been made to publicize the lessons of Feyzin, the company s standards, and the reasons for them. However, this did not prevent the installation of the drain point. Note that a number of people must have been involved. Besides the man who actually fitted it and his foreman, someone must have issued a work permit and accepted it back (when he should have inspected the job), and several persons must have used the drain point. Many must have passed b. If only one of them had recognized the substandard constmction and drawn it to the attention of those responsible, the fire would not have occurred [10]. [Pg.175]

Methylation of nicotine to the pyridinium iodide with methyl iodide, followed by its conversion to the hydroxide with silver oxide in water, oxidation with potassium permanganate to the A -methyl nicotinic acid hydroxide and subsequent deprotonation with silver oxide yielded Trigollenine as colorless needles (1897CB2117). In a later publication, the formation of nicotinic acid from nicotine was described. Esterification followed by aminolysis and methylation yielded the A -methylnicotinamide... [Pg.127]

In a more recent publication the same group mentions that Ag(I) salts in combination with chiral phosphine ligands can catalyze the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition involving the azomethine precursor 64b and methyl vinyl ketone (Scheme 6.43) [87]. The reaction, which presumably also required a stoichiometric amount of the catalyst, proceeds to give 65b in a good yield with 70% ee. [Pg.242]

API has developed specifications for V belting in oil-field power transmission applications [12]. Reference 12 is used to carry out detailed design calculations. Although this is an API publication, the specifications contained are consistent with specifications of other industrial groups. The basic calculation techniques above have been carried out for the stock V belts available. These data are tabulated in the API publication to simplify the design effect for V-belt power transmission systems. [Pg.426]

This review is not comprehensive but emphasizes the more recent literature through 1985 into early 1986. References to earlier work are included in an affort to make the subject understandable to those unfamiliar with past research and also to cover topics not touched upon in recent publications. The term optically active is used here in the sense that the chiral molecule under discussion is nonracemic but not necessarily enantiomerically pure. The terms homochiral and optically pure are used synonymously with enantiomerically pure. [Pg.56]
