Engage the Public

Hence it is essential that modern-day chemical process facilities affectively engage the public, and also even more importantly the local communities, in a continuous dialogue throughout all life cycle phases of a process plant (i.e. from concept studies to operation, modifications and eventually until decommissioning). The safety policies and associated decisions must reflect, at least to a reasonable extent, that the public has been heard and their views are respected. 

A nonprofit professional and trade association sendng those engaged in the research, testing, measurement and remediation of radon. Formulates and promulgates measurement and remediation standards develops educational programs for the public and the radon profession seeks to enhance the remediation of radon. 

Hermetic and Rosicmdan circles such as the Golden Dawn began to engage more publicly with science after the discoveries of radiation, radioactive transformation, and radium. In a case like that of the Alchemical Society, two subjects, alchemy and radiation,4 allowed the groups from sharply different social worlds—those of mainstream science and occultism—to interact. These interactions also contributed to the popular press s alchemical understanding of the newly emerging discourse of atomic physics. 

Academia is not funded, overtly, to engage in research into the applied science of development. That has also never been conceptualized as an FDA role because FDA is viewed, by government and the public, as a regulatory agency. The fact that FDA has to use science to compose its regulations and standards, and that the science for that has to come from somewhere, has not been recognized. What about the private sector On the one hand, people thought, "Well, NIH does all this work," and on the other, people said, "Well, the private sector is supposed to take the basic science and develop it into products."... 

Professor Richard Wilson of Harvard University and an associate, Edmund Crouch, among others, have devoted considerable effort to collecting and analyzing risk information on activities commonly engaged in and exposures commonly incurred. This type of information can be used effectively to both educate the public about risk in general and to assist risk managers efforts to explain specific risk decisions. 

In the past, the principal factors that a businessman had to take into account when plotting a future course of activity for his firm were the attitude of the public toward his products and the likely actions and reactions of actual and potential competitors. If he chose to engage in research and development, he added a third category of worries—the possibility that nature might prove fickle and prevent his scientists and engineers from developing the new products and processes upon which his plans... 

Private philanthropy occupies an important place in the past and present of global health. For example, the Rockefeller Foundation has made significant contributions to public health, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has made major investments in this regard over the past 15 years. While these contributions are welcome, they cannot and will not form the basis of concerted global public sector action to control an entire class of infectious diseases. Private philanthropy is, by definition, not accountable to the public in the way that action undertaken by the public sector is. It is neither fully transparent nor predictable, nor is it subject to the checks and balances that come from engaging in multilateral cooperation involving national health authorities that are accountable to their citizens.
