National Institute of Public Health and the Environment

The European Union System for the Evaluation of Substances (EUSES) [8] is the software provided by European Chemical Bureau (ECB) to implement the EU Technical Guidance Documents on Risk Assessment for new notified substances, existing substances, and biocides [3]. The development of EUSES 2.1 was commissioned by the European Commission to the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) of the Netherlands. The work was supervised by an EU working group comprised of representatives of the JRC-European Chemicals Bureau, EU Member States, and the European chemical industry.

A more recent Dutch report (Vermeire et al. 2001) provides a practical guide for the application of probabilistic distributions of default assessment factors in human health risk assessments, and it is stated that the proposed distributions will be applied in risk assessments of new and existing substances and biocides prepared at RIVM (the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment) and TNO. The report concentrated on the quantification of default distributions of the assessment factors related to interspecies extrapolation (animal-to-human), intraspecies extrapolation (human-to-human), and exposure duration extrapolation.

ITER is a free Internet database of human health risk values for over 600 chemicals of environmental concern from several organizations worldwide. The data are presented in table format with side-by-side comparisons of risk values from the various organizations, below which are synopses that provide explanations for differences among risk values as well as links to more detailed information. ITER currently contains data from the Agency for Toxic Substances Disease Registry (ATSDR), Health Canada, National Institute of Public Health and the Environment, The Netherlands (RFVM), US EPA, and independent parties whose risk values have undergone peer review.
