The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) was founded in 1978 as a nonprofit, worldwide foundation that seeks to improve the well-being of the general public through the advancement of science (ILSI 2007a). 

Its goal is to further the understanding of scientific issues relating to nutrition, food safety, toxicology, risk assessment, and the environment by bringing together scientists from academia, government, and industry.

ECETOC was established in 1978 as a scientific, nonprofit making, noncommercial association, financed by 51 of the leading industrial companies with interests in the manufacture and use of chemicals (ECETOC 2007a).
