Work safe

Cut-oul wind speed is the maximum w ind speed beyond which the prime mover may overspeed above its permissible limits. As the structure and the blades are designed for a particular maximum speed, a wind speed higher than this may exceed their mechanical endurance and become unsafe. At this speed the brakes apply and the machine is disconnected from the grid. The cut-in and cut-out speeds define the wind speed limits within which the turbine will work safely through the generator. Rated wind speed is the speed at which the prime mover rotates at the rated negative slip and generates the rated power.

A general description of the three major classes of MDI s and brief descriptions of adhesive applications are shown in Table 1. More recently, MDl has become the isocyanate of choice in adhesives, partly because MDI has a lower vapor pressure than TDI does (see pp. 296-297 in [18]). Isocyanates have been shown to cause an allergic reaction in a small percentage of the population. This reaction can manifest itself in the form of an asthmatic condition [19]. Before starting work with isocyanates, researchers are encouraged to read about the proper precautions to take, in order to work safely with these materials. Researchers should also check with their local health and environmental safety representatives [20]. 

Allowing completion of work safely and cost-effectively. 

Specialty duties are assigned to teams formed for specific tasks or responding to unusual circumstances (e.g., waste characterization, confined-space rescue, asbestos, lead abatement, etc.). These teams are formed, as necessary, on a permanent or temporary basis. In many cases, special training, drills and exercises, and development of safe work plans are needed to prepare team members to conduct work safely and effectively. 

The HASP is the model for performing work safely and, if properly designed, will help to integrate all site- and task-related hazards and control measures. Wlien working with the DOE or the Corps of Engineers there may be additional documents that should be considered when developing a plan. Make sure that you understand all site-specific needs.

The primary intent of supervised field experience is for employees to be observed by the experienced person during the course of their workday to ensure that they are working safely. These 1- or 3-day observation periods allow the experienced person to observe the worker applying proper techniques and to emphasize site-specific hazards and special working conditions. The observation period includes some on-the-job training as a reinforcement of previous training received (see Figure 8-2) [1]. 

Six of the eleven sites evaluated (Sites A, B, F, G, I, and K) identified generie remediation hazards in their SSAHPs but did not address the hazards assoeiated with site- and operation-speeifie tasks. For example, the SSAHP for Site B broadly deseribed hazards sueh as the potential for inhalation, ingestion, eontaet, and absorption of eontaminants or heavy equipment and general eonstruetion hazards. The plan did not deseribe speeifie hazards (i.e., levels of speeifie ehemieal eontaminants, the hazards related to the use of speeifie types of equipment) assoeiated with speeifie workplaee aetivities and their related eontrol measures. These general analyses do not provide employees with suflheient information to enable them to work safely, nor do they enable the employer... 

Any eontraetor being eonsidered for an award must have a history of performing work in a safe manner. The authors believe that if a eontraetor has performed work safely in the past, it is likely that the management of the eontraetor will believe in and praetiee safe work performanee as part of its present and future business philosophy. 

Contract employees must perform their work safely. Considering that contractors often perform very specialized and potentially hazardous tasks, such as confined space entry activities and nonroutine repair activities, their work must be controlled while they are on or near a process covered by PSM. A permit system or work authorization system for these activities is helpful for all affected employers. The use of a work authorization system keeps an employer informed of contract employee activities. Thus, the employer has better coordination and more management control over the work being performed in the process area. 

All employees, working with highly hazardous chemicals must understand the safety and health hazards (29CFR1910.1200 - the Hazard Communication Standard) by knowing the properties of the chemicals with which they work, safe operating procedures, work practices, and emergency action.

Organization—Shift size and training decisions affect workload and a person s ability to perform work safely and efficiently. Reward and punishments used by the organization influence what individuals do. 

Dry diazodicyanoimidazole is highly explosive, however one can work safely with its solutions. When heated to 80°C in solution, 26 loses nitrogen, generating a highly electrophilic intermediate (Scheme 12) (73JA2695). Its chemical characteristics more resemble carbonium ions than aryne or carbodiimide. 

The only really safe way of injecting drugs is to use a completely new set of works every time. If this is not possible, advise clients to keep their works safe and not mix them up with those belonging to other people. Safety, Loss Prevention and Security are the direct responsibility of line management and are important measures of managerial performance. In order to insure that every employee is prepared to work safely, every supervisor has the responsibility to provide a safe work environment with proper equipment and adequate training. Each supervisor also has the responsibility, through personal example and the involvement of all employees, to create a climate in which everyone shares concern for the safety and security of their fellow workers and for the prevention of losses. 

A tribunal in Nova Scotia has recently held otherwise. In Michelin v Nova Scotia (Workers Compensation Board), a worker who was in perfect health and had no outside habits that would adversely affect his sleep complained that working variable shifts adversely affected his work and private life (54). The workers compensation tribunal found that shift-work-maladaption syndrome is a compensable injury under the workers compensation scheme. The board found the condition disabling because the worker was too tired to work safely, and his inability to adapt to the alternating shifts was the cause of the injury. The board also found persuasive the worker s clean and healthy lifestyle that did not otherwise affect his sleep. 

Post-illness or post-injury review. The health status of an employee should be reviewed after a prolonged illness or injury to ensure that the employee is capable of returning to work safely and that, if necessary, the work assignment can be adjusted until recovery is complete. 

It is imperative students learn to work safely in the laboratory so every experiment group highlights any necessary safety precautions. Chemicals are selected to minimize risk and students are expected to discuss their experimental design with the instructor to be sure it is appropriate and safe. 

Many of the chemicals in your school laboratory are hazardous. Some are corrosive, some are flammable, and some are poisonous. Many exhibit these properties when they are combined. You can work safely with these chemicals, as long as you treat them with care and respect, observe proper safety precautions, and follow the directions that are given by your teacher and this textbook.
