In 1988 the EPA found that the water from some drinking fountains had lead levels up to 20,000 ppb, 400 times the then-existing maximum level considered safe. Since 15 ppb is now the acceptable level, the levels found in these fountains would be over 1000 times the limit. About 1 million drinking fountains contain lead solder. For a list of drinking fountains that contain lead, contact the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline, listed in Appendix B, under Drinking Water.

EPA uses its Clean Air Act authority to set limits on the amount of radionuclides, such as Sr-90. that may be released to the air. EPA s Superfund Hotline 1-800-424-9346 or 1-800-535-0202 EPA uses its Safe Drinking Water Act authority to establish maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) tor beta emitters, such as strontium-90, in public drinking water. The MCL for beta emitters is 4 millirem per year or 8 picoCuries per liter of water.
