In 1988 the EPA found that the water from some drinking fountains had lead levels up to 20,000 ppb, 400 times the then-existing maximum level considered safe. Since 15 ppb is now the acceptable level, the levels found in these fountains would be over 1000 times the limit. About 1 million drinking fountains contain lead solder.
