Preventive measure

To minimize the probability of an accident, analyses should identify suitable preventive and mitigating measures. These measures should include but not be limited to the following  [Pg.5]

Policies and procedures that relate to safe handling of toxins and infectious material can be broken down into four major categories preventive measures, containment, disposal and decontamination. [Pg.295]

There are three major steps that should be taken to safeguard the welfare of workers who handle toxins  [Pg.295]

I An institutional physician knowledgeable about human poisoning should be notified that the work is in progress, and this physician should be given the names of all persons who handle the toxin. Similarly, all laboratory persons should know the identity and whereabouts of the physician knowledgeable about poisoning. [Pg.295]

The use of prevention as a basis of safety requires the early identification of process hazards and the conditions under which they can occur. This allows the specification of boundary conditions, or an envelope within which the process must be maintained if it is to be operated safely, and the provision of measures to ensure that the process remains within the envelope. Where possible this should be achieved by the design of the process and plant, but it may also depend on instruments, trips, alarms and control systems. In addition, organizational procedures such as rigorous instruction, strict enforcement of operating conditions and the provision of adequate maintenance are required. [Pg.112]

The safe process envelope is defined by several parameters which are examined below  [Pg.113]

The minimum temperature at which uncontrolled exotherms will start under plant conditions, and the safety margin between this temperature and the normal operating temperature should be defined. To prevent accumulation of unreacted material, the minimum and/or maximum temperatures at which the desired reaction occurs should be defined. (See also case histories Al 31-38, pages 175-179.) [Pg.113]

Often the process can be run safely by making sure that stocks of chemicals are stored separately and properly labelled. Where this is not possible, or materials may be contaminated, or the consequences of a mistake would be severe, it may be necessary to analyse each material before adding it to the reactor, or to analyse the reaction mass after addition to ensure that the correct quantity has been added. [Pg.113]

The maximum rate of addition that the reactor cooling system can handle should be identified, and precautions taken to ensure that this limit cannot be exceeded. One way of doing this is to install a restricting orifice in the feed line. (See also case histories Al 39-49. pages 179-182.) [Pg.113]

A number of different approaches and methods can be used to minimize the corrosion of engineering structures  [Pg.513]

The concept of corrosion system is of particular importance for the selection of methods of corrosion prevention and protection. Indeed, the corrosion behavior of a metal is influenced by a multitude of electrochemical, mechanical and physical [Pg.513]

Proper design of engineering structures greatly reduces the risks of corrosion. Indeed, the shape of an object can critically affect its lifetime in a given corrosive environment. This general statement shall be illustrated with a few simple examples. [Pg.514]

In certain cases, good aeration is enough to avoid the formation of humid zones. For example, the corrosion of car doors usually develops from the inside, where the moisture accumulates, and moves outwards. Well-designed aeration vents prevent the accumulation of humidity and thus greatly decrease the rate of corrosion. [Pg.514]

When specifying materials for a given project, the corrosion resistance is just one criterion among many others, but it is of uttermost importance for the life time and safety of installations, machines and devices. In this section we focus on the corrosion resistance only and, more specifically, on metallic materials. Preventive Measures. The intake uptake biokinetic model (lUBK) projects the impact of lead in the environment on blood lead. This model assumes conservatively high levels of intake and cannot account for chemical speciation, thus over-predictions of blood lead levels often occur. Nonetheless, because of the allegations of the impact of blood lead and neurobehavioral development, blood lead levels in children are being reduced adrninistratively to below 10 //g/dL. In order to do so, soil leads are being reduced to a level of between 500—1000 ppm where remediation is required. [Pg.53]

Medical Programs. Large chemical plants have at least one hill-time physician who is at the plant five days a week and on call at all other times. Smaller plants either have part-time physicians or take injured employees to a nearby hospital or clinic by arrangement with the company compensation-insurance carrier. When part-time physicians or outside medical services are used, there is Httle opportunity for medical personnel to become familiar with plant operations or to assist in improving the health aspects of plant work. Therefore, it is essential that chemical-ha2ards manuals and procedures, which highlight symptoms and methods of treatment, be developed. A hill-time industrial physician should devote a substantial amount of time to becoming familiar with the plant, its processes, and the materials employed. Such education enables the physician to be better prepared to treat injuries and illnesses and to advise on preventive measures. [Pg.101]

The understanding of these actions of aspirin started in 1971 (45) and resulted in the recommendations of the medical community that small doses of aspirin, used under the care of the doctor, may be a prevention measure for heart attack, and stroke for those considered at risk in the population.
