Prevention measures secondary

A measure is preventive if it prevents the occurrence of a runaway, a decomposition, or a hazardous secondary reaction. The system conditions remain close to operating conditions. Excessive increases in temperatures and/or pressures are avoided. Preventive measures include feed rate control systems, interlocks to prevent the reaction from starting unless sufficient diluent is present or the cooling system is working, and tests for the presence of catalysts or unwanted impurities. Preventive measures are always to be preferred over protective or mitigating (defensive) measures. [Pg.99]

Caution Humans are infectious for mosquitoes for at least seventy-two hours after the onset of symptoms, so mosquito control can provide an important measure of control to ensure prevention of secondary Venuzuelan equine encephalitis following either intentional or natural outbreaks of VEE. [Pg.187]

In a special publication devoted to sulfide ore dust explosions, a dust explosion in a copper-zinc sulfide mine is discussed and related to causes and preventive measures [1]. Control measures [2] and prevention of secondary explosions are also discussed [3], and surveyed, including the need for further work [4], The results of experimental work on the use of limestone dust to suppress explosions in pyrites dusts are presented [5], For another special publication on ore dust explosion with numerous incidents and further studies on mechanism and control see [6], Explosibility declines in the order pyrrotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, covellite, chalcocite, galena. Pyrite at 1000 g/m3 can give a peak pressure of 5.8 bar [7], Self heating of broken sulfide ore, to possible ignition, has been studied. Pyrrhotite seems primarily responsible [8],... [Pg.257]

Because terrorists are unlikely to announce they are about to release a vesicant agent, there are no effective preventive measures for vesicant exposure. Recognition of the exposure and rapid, effective decontamination of victims is essential to prevent secondary exposure and additional cases. [Pg.139]

Flaking should not be helped along under any circumstances. Peeling off any bits of skin can result in uneven skin tone, infection, hyperpigmentation, scars or localized achromia. It is also essential to take preventive measures against infection after a papillary TCA-SAS peel, as the latter destroys most of the skin s defenses. An antibiotic cream is applied during the first week after the peel. The skin should be cleaned before each application of cream, and any occurrence of contact allergies, which can sometimes be confused with secondary infections, should be monitored. [Pg.16]

Most patients with PROP and MMA are prescribed L-camitine supplements to prevent a secondary carnitine deficiency, and routine measurement of plasma or serum carnitine is recommended [5]. This analysis will include total carnitine, carnitine esters (esterified), and free carnitine concentrations. Low concentrations of free carnitine suggest a need to increase the supplementation dose. With supplementation, the total and ester fractions are often elevated. [Pg.226]

An example of how an evidence-based quality framework can be used to improve healthcare has been seen with improvements in stroke services in the United Kingdom following the implementation of the National Service Framework (NSF) for older people in 2001— The Biannual Sentinel Stroke Audit for 2008 has recently been published, and it demonstrates a continued significant improvement in stroke services. In terms of healthcare structure, 96% of hospitals in the United Kingdom now offer specialist stroke services, with an increasing number of specialist stroke unit beds 98% of hospitals employ a physician with a specialist interest in stroke. There also have been improvements in process of care measures, including the uptake of thrombolysis services and secondary prevention measures. A similar initiative has been beneficial for coronary heart disease and more recently has been broadly applied to cancer. [Pg.97]

Those concerned with the promotion and protection of health classify preventive measures into three basic categories primordial prevention, primary prevention, and secondary prevention. Primordial prevention consists of measures to prevent illness or injury by removing the conditions that lead to them. Primary prevention consists of measures to prevent the health consequences of a specific illness or injury in a specific individual or group. Secondary prevention consists of measures to prevent, or minimize the health consequences, of illness or injury (such as preventing the spread of an infectious disease to others) after the disease or injury has begun. [Pg.32]

There is a claim that low TDP in blood may be a laboratory marker for alcoholism and a predictor for overt thiamine deficiency (Ceccanti et al. 2005). However, this marker is apparently secondary to earlier, direct and diverse elfects of ethanol on all systems of the human body which pave the road to alcoholic-TD encephalopathies of the Wernicke-Korsakolf type (Tables 33.1 and 33.2) (Pitel et al. 2011). Therefore, preventive measures are undertaken in several countries, including mandatory supplementation of bread flour with thiamine. However, there is no evidence as to whether such treatment delays onset of dementia in the population of alcoholics. [Pg.596]

Within the PSLG Final Report, particular emphasis is given to overfill prevention as this is the primary means by which this major accident hazard can be prevented. In assessing what overfill prevention measures are required to reduce the risk to the environment to ALARP, the existing capacity of the bund and the tank level it was based on must be taken into account to determine the potential environmental consequences, eg whether the spillage is likely to be retained by the secondary containment system. If the overfill prevention system and the primary containment measures as a whole are in accordance with good practice, the risk to the environment is reduced. [Pg.56]
