Prevention measures secondary

A measure is preventive if it prevents the occurrence of a runaway, a decomposition, or a hazardous secondary reaction. The system conditions remain close to operating conditions. Excessive increases in temperatures and/or pressures are avoided. Preventive measures include feed rate control systems, interlocks to prevent the reaction from starting unless sufficient diluent is present or the cooling system is working, and tests for the presence of catalysts or unwanted impurities. Preventive measures are always to be preferred over protective or mitigating (defensive) measures.

Most patients with PROP and MMA are prescribed L-camitine supplements to prevent a secondary carnitine deficiency, and routine measurement of plasma or serum carnitine is recommended [5]. Those concerned with the promotion and protection of health classify preventive measures into three basic categories primordial prevention, primary prevention, and secondary prevention. Primordial prevention consists of measures to prevent illness or injury by removing the conditions that lead to them. Primary prevention consists of measures to prevent the health consequences of a specific illness or injury in a specific individual or group. Secondary prevention consists of measures to prevent, or minimize the health consequences, of illness or injury (such as preventing the spread of an infectious disease to others) after the disease or injury has begun.

There is a claim that low TDP in blood may be a laboratory marker for alcoholism and a predictor for overt thiamine deficiency (Ceccanti et al. 2005). However, this marker is apparently secondary to earlier, direct and diverse elfects of ethanol on all systems of the human body which pave the road to alcoholic-TD encephalopathies of the Wernicke-Korsakolf type (Tables 33.1 and 33.2) (Pitel et al. 2011). Within the PSLG Final Report, particular emphasis is given to overfill prevention as this is the primary means by which this major accident hazard can be prevented. In assessing what overfill prevention measures are required to reduce the risk to the environment to ALARP, the existing capacity of the bund and the tank level it was based on must be taken into account to determine the potential environmental consequences, eg whether the spillage is likely to be retained by the secondary containment system. If the overfill prevention system and the primary containment measures as a whole are in accordance with good practice, the risk to the environment is reduced.
