Preventive Measures in Drug Allergy

Many drugs are given unnecessarily, and the number of adverse reactions to drugs is directly proportional to the number of courses of treatment prescribed (Klein et al. 1972). The administration of several drugs concurrently may also increase the risk of a reaction. 

Even when specific diagnostic procedures are not available, the risk of serious allergic reaction to a drug can be minimized by  

Taking a careful history of previous adverse reactions to drugs, including those chemically related to the one intended for use 

Availability of routine precautions and emergency treatment in the course of therapy with drugs known to cause immediate systemic reactions 

Proper advice to the patient on the drugs he is receiving and on those to which he is believed to be allergic ( allergy pass or tag)
