Fire protection preventive and protective measures

Fire protection of buiidings, the preventive and protective measures that wiii protect persons in the event of a fire, fall into two broad categories referred as passive and active protection. [Pg.173]

Passive fire protection is based on the principie of containment the compartments of the buiiding are constructed so that if a fire shouid occur, it wiii be restricted to one area. For exampie, fire doors shouid prevent the spread of smoke and flames from iobbies, stairweiis and iift shafts. [Pg.173]

Another exampie of passive fire protection is the design of escape routes, which shouid not incorporate combustibie waii, ceiiing or floor iinings. Fire dampers shouid be instaiied in ducts where they pass through compartment walls, and holes in such walls around cables and other services should be fire stopped. [Pg.173]

Doors and shutters in compartment walls should be able to withstand the effects of fire for the same period of time as the walls themselves. [Pg.173]

Active fire protection systems may detect or extinguish a fire, with a water sprinkier or inert gas flooding instaiiation performing both functions. An automatic fire detection [Pg.173]
