Preventative and control measures

In the use of chemicals, there are a number of measures that can be taken to eliminate the hazard and so prevent employees being put at risk of ill-health. Where the hazard cannot be eliminated control measures must be implemented to reduce to a minimum the risk employees face from the chemicals. The primary aim of these measures should be to protect the whole of the workforce rather than the individual operator who is handling the substance. It is helpful to follow a strategy when considering control measures  [Pg.152]

2 Measure the degree of hazard (concentration of the substance in air - see Section 11.6). [Pg.152]

4 Implement preventative and control measures (outlined below). [Pg.152]

Good housekeeping - accumulations of substances on the workplace floor, either as dusts or as residues left over from previous process batches, can contaminate clothing and should be cleaned up for disposal to stores or an appropriate waste bin. [Pg.153]

Eating arrangements - separate accommodation should be provided for the consumption of food and drink and employees should change their overalls and wash their hands before using it. ere fadhties for smokers are provided they should be such that they do not interfere with other diners. [Pg.153]

It is helpful to follow a strategy when considering control measures  [Pg.151]

Where it is not possible to take preventative measures and it is necessary to use a hazardous substance, control measures should be implemented that reduce to a minimum the degree of exposure of the operator to the substance. Typical control measures include  [Pg.152]

One of the cornerstones of EPA s strategy to prevent oil spills from reaching our nation s waters is the Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures (SPCC) rule. SPCC requires regulated facilities to prepare and implement spill prevention and control measures. This ensures that facilities have containment and other countermeasures in place to prevent oil spills from reaching navigable waters or adjoining shorelines. [Pg.453]
