Hundreds of divergent pressure-sensitive adhesive products are available to cope with numerous applications in industry, ofiSce, household, etc. They dilfer in material and/or in design. Most are wound into rolls some are die-cut into separate pieces or assembled on sheets. [Pg.116]

Other important properties that can be measured in the laboratory include sealabiHty, printabiHty, or coating adhesion. A number of higher poly(vinyl ether)s, in particular the ethyl and butyl polymers, have found use as adhesives. When antioxidants are incorporated, pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes from poly(vinyl ethyl ether) are said to have twice the shelf life of similar tapes from natural rubber. Copolymers of vinyl isobutyl ether with methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate (Acronal series) and with vinyl chloride have been commercially marketed. Release coatings are important components of pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) products such as tapes and labels [1]. Release materials are coated onto the backside of PSA tape backings (often called low adhesion backsizes or LABs in this form) to provide the desired tape roll unwind force. They are also coated onto various substrates to form release liners for PSA products such as labels and transfer tapes. Typically the thickness of the release coating is less than 1 p,m, and often times less than 0.1 jLm. Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) is a random polymer made from butadiene and styrene monomers. It possesses good mechanical property, processing behavior, and can be used like natural rubber. Print adhesion on plastics (and foil) is normally checked using a self-adhesive tape peel test. A few inches of a suitable standard tape is firmly pressed onto the print area then pulled off, slowly at first, then more rapidly. An assessment of print adhesion can be made from the quantity (ideally none) removed.
