Surfaces protection

Enclosed agitated filters are useful when volatile solvents are in use or when the solvent gives off toxic vapor or fume. Another significant advantage is that their operation does not require any manual labor. Control can be manual or automatic, usually by timers or by specific measurements of the product. Most filters are made of mild steel, with the exposed surfaces protected by lead, tile, mbber lining, or by coating or spraying with other substances as necessary. Filtration areas up to 10 m are available and the maximum cake thickness is 1 m. Apphcations are mainly in the chemical industry for the recovery of solvents. [Pg.394]

Surface Protection. The surface properties of fluorosihcones have been studied over a number of years. The CF group has the lowest known intermolecular force of polymer substituents. A study (6) of liquid and solid forms of fluorosihcones has included a comparison to fluorocarbon polymers. The low surface tensions for poly(3,3,3-trifluoropropyl)methylsiloxane and poly(3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,6-nonafluorohexyl)methylsiloxane both resemble some of the lowest tensions for fluorocarbon polymers, eg, polytetrafluoroethylene. [Pg.400]

Nickel—beryllium casting alloys are readily air melted, in electric or induction furnaces. Melt surface protection is suppHed by a blanket of argon gas or an alumina-base slag cover. Furnace linings or cmcibles of magnesia are preferred, with zirconium siUcate or mullite also adequate. Sand, investment, ceramic, and permanent mold materials are appropriate for these alloys. Beryllium ia the composition is an effective deoxidizer and scavenger of sulfur and nitrogen. [Pg.73]

In recent years use has been made of the strong adhesion, toughness and water impermeability of some of the epoxy resins to secure greatly improved surface protection of magnesium alloys. By this means it has been possible to employ these alloys even in situations where they are drenched repeatedly with sea-water. [Pg.753]

From what has already been indicated, it will be apparent that use of beryllium in almost any commercial environment involving moisture may require some form of surface protection and it should be recognised that apart from the hazard of pitting corrosion, precautions must usually be taken against adverse galvanic coupling with heavy metals. [Pg.836]

The pale green product is called basic copper carbonate and is responsible for the green patina of copper and bronze objects (Fig. 16.13). The patina adheres to the surface, protects the metal, and has a pleasing appearance. [Pg.786]

The term erosion-corrosion is used to describe the increased rate of attack caused by a combination of erosion and corrosion. If a fluid stream contains suspended particles, or where there is high velocity or turbulence, erosion will tend to remove the products of corrosion and any protective film, and the rate of attack will be markedly increased. If erosion is likely to occur, more resistant materials must be specified, or the material surface protected in some way. For example, plastics inserts are used to prevent erosion-corrosion at the inlet to heat-exchanger tubes. [Pg.291]

The solubility of wax in vulcanised rubbers is low (of the order of 0.5% for NR) but enough wax has to be added to a rubber compound to ensure that once the compound has been vulcanised and the rubber cools, the rate of migrational movement of the wax from the rubber mass to the surface of the rubber is rapid. Dependant upon the application, the addition level of wax can be up to about 10 phr. Migration of the wax to the rubber surface will also carry other ingredients such as antioxidants, antiozonants and other materials (e.g., vulcanisation residuals), to enhance the surface protection. [Pg.162]

Invent materials for surface protection (paints and coatings) that are truly long-lasting and rugged. [Pg.123]

At pH 4 most bacteria are killed within 30 min, and at physiological luminal pH, 99% of bacteria are killed within 5 min [14], Certain bacteria, like lactobacilli, are more acid-resistant, and some microbes survive the hostile gastric environment by colonizing luminal niches at the mucosal surface, protected by gastric bicarbonate secretion. This is the case for Helicobacter pylori, related spiral-... [Pg.3]

Stability Sugar side chains can potentially stabilize a glycoprotein in a number of ways, including enhancing its solubility, shielding hydrophobic patches on its surface, protection from proteolysis and by direct participation in intrachain stabilizing interactions... [Pg.31]

The other general strategy depicted in Fig. 9.6 is surface protection by a passivating coating. This coating must also adhere to the C3 material under thermal stress, it must not react itself with carbon and as a thin layer it must protect the carbon from oxygen diffusion. The combination of all these requirement is best fulfilled with glassy... [Pg.266]
