Preprints — Quill pins for fhe reasons described above require a number of preprints. This is largely an empirical exercise. For that reason, the best approach is to conduct a print test and measure the number of printings necessary to achieve consistent spot size. For example, 10 spottings may be required before consisfenf spof size is reached. Therefore, the number of preprints required to assure high quality array production would be about 15.

Printing Tests.—In printing or stamping, ultramarine is used mostly with albumin. Some qualities of ultramarine cause putrefaction of the albumin and are hence little suitable for this purpose. To test the behaviour towards albumin, 2 grams of the ultramarine are well mixed with 2 grams of albumin and 10 c.c. of hot water and then left at 25-30°... 

The examination of metallic pigments is usually restricted to a few technical tests (covering power, printing tests) and to qualitative tests (for gum, fatty substances, artificial organic dyes, metals), the ordinary methods being employed. In rare cases determinations are required of the separate metals, the methods already described in the chapter on metals fVol. I) being then used.

A quick way to test the printer functionality is to use the Print Test Page option. This option is presented to you as the last step when setting up a new printer in Windows. Always select this option when you re setting up a new printer so you can test its functionality. To print a test page for a printer that s already set up, look for the option on the Properties menu for the particular printer. 

In the next section, you learned about some of the printing problems that are commonly found in the Windows environment (e.g., wrong driver installed). You learned how to use the Windows printing troubleshooting utilities (Print Test Page and the Troubleshooting Wizard) to troubleshoot these problems. 

Rub resistance BS 3110 1959 (94). This is the resistance of a printed test piece to withstand rubbing against either another similar printed test piece or against a plain test specimen. The objective is to see that the ink/print has cured and will not scuff or smear in service. 

TLC and GC/MS can be used to determine the age of writing inks on questioned documents. Dating techniques that use TLC are based on analysis of ink dye components, while GC/MS can date inks based on detection, identification, and quantification of the residues of the vehicle solvents in ink hnes. Capabihty to date most ballpoint, porous tip, roller pen, stamp pad, and jet printer inks by analyzing the single ink entry, stamp impression, or printed test in question was shown by testing in the Division of Identification and Forensic Science, Israel Police Headquarters.

The same basic smoothness measurements are apphcable for coated paper as for base paper. As rotogravure printing is the most demanding printing method for paper surface, a special test method is used only for that purpose. The socounted visually, provides information on the printabiKty. 

However, there still remain many important paper properties which are not yet measurable on-line, and where on-Kne measurements will probably not be available in the near future. Most important to note in this category is printabihty. A printability sensor, e. g., would be able to predict missing dots in a real printing test.

The CBM based microarray technology described by some authors offer fundamental advantages over current non-DNA microarray technology, such as retention of protein functionality after immobilization, ease of fabrication, extended stability of the printed microarray, integrated test for quality control (QC) and the capacity to print test proteins without a purification step [55, 169, 170]. These features, together with the intrinsic spedfidly of CBMs for individual carbohydrates and the fadle modification with peptides and fluorescent molecules, allow for efficient production of protein and peptide microarrays. These can be used in a variety of potential applications technically impractical via conventional microarray technologies [55].
