The maximum bubble pressure method is good to a few tenths percent accuracy, does not depend on contact angle (except insofar as to whether the inner or outer radius of the tube is to be used), and requires only an approximate knowledge of the density of the liquid (if twin tubes are used), and the measurements can be made rapidly. The method is also amenable to remote operation and can be used to measure surface tensions of not easily accessible liquids such as molten metals [29]. [Pg.18]

One may rationalize emulsion type in terms of interfacial tensions. Bancroft [20] and later Clowes [21] proposed that the interfacial film of emulsion-stabilizing surfactant be regarded as duplex in nature, so that an inner and an outer interfacial tension could be discussed. On this basis, the type of emulsion formed (W/O vs. O/W) should be such that the inner surface is the one of higher surface tension. Thus sodium and other alkali metal soaps tend to stabilize O/W emulsions, and the explanation would be that, being more water- than oil-soluble, the film-water interfacial tension should be lower than the film-oil one. Conversely, with the relatively more oil-soluble metal soaps, the reverse should be true, and they should stabilize W/O emulsions, as in fact they do. An alternative statement, known as Bancroft s rule, is that the external phase will be that in which the emulsifying agent is the more soluble [20]. To utilise hiUy the strength of the inner member it should be stressed from the yield point in compression to the yield point in tension. From Figure 9 it is seen that if the members are initially stress-free at least three must be employed to make this possible. [Pg.83]

The derrick or mast must also be designed to withstand wind loads. Wind loads are imposed by the wind acting on the outer and inner surfaces of the open structure. When designing for wind loads, the designer must consider that the drill pipe or other tubulars may be out of the hole and stacked in the structure. This means that there will be loads imposed on the structure by the pipe weight (i.e., setback load) in addition to the additional loads imposed by the wind. The horizontal forces due to wind are counteracted by the lattice structure that is firmly secured to the structure s foundation. Additional support to the structure can be accomplished by the guy lines attached to the structure and to a dead man anchor some distance away from it. The dead man anchor is buried in the ground to firmly support the tension loads in the guy line. The guy lines are pretensioned when attached to the dead man anchor. [Pg.499]

Stress fibers are parallel bundles of actin filaments that develop in the cytoplasm of fibroblasts from the cortical actin network in response to mechanical tension. These often bind to the plasma membrane at focal contacts and, through transmembrane linker glycoproteins, to the extracellular matrix. Thus, actin filaments of stress fibers indirectly Join to the inner face of the plasma membrane through molecular assemblies of attachment proteins, which include an actin-capping protein, a-actinin, vinculin, and talin (Small, 1988). [Pg.27]

Recently, Samec et al. [38] have investigated the same system by the video-image pendant drop method. Surface tension data from the two studies are compared in Fig. 2, where the potential scale from the study [36] was shifted so that the positions of the electrocapillary maxima coincide. The systematic difference in the surface tension data of ca. 3%, cf. the dotted line in Fig. 2, was ascribed to the inaccurate determination of the drop volume, which was calculated from the shape of the drop image and used further in the evaluation of the surface tension [38].
