Particle Size. The soHds in a fluidized bed are never identical in size and foUow a particle size distribution. An average particle diameter, is generally used for design. It is necessary to give relatively more emphasis to the low end of the particle size distribution (fines), which is done by using the surface mean diameter, to calculate an average particle size ... [Pg.70]

Avera.ge Particle Size. Average particle size refers to a statistical diameter, the value of which depends to a certain extent on the method of deterniiaation. The average particle size can be calculated from the particle-size distribution (see Size measurement of particles). [Pg.181]

A typical recipe for batch emulsion polymerization is shown in Table 13. A reaction time of 7—8 h at 30°C is requited for 95—98% conversion. A latex is produced with an average particle diameter of 100—150 nm. Other modifying ingredients may be present, eg, other colloidal protective agents such as gelatin or carboxymethylcellulose, initiator activators such as redox types, chelates, plasticizers, stabilizers, and chain-transfer agents. [Pg.439]

ASTM recognizes two types of zinc dust in specification ASTM D 520-51 (reapproved 1976) (143), which includes permissible impurity concentrations. The metallic content of most commercial grades is 95—97%. The zinc oxide content is between 3 and 5% finer dusts contain higher concentrations because of high surface areas. Zinc dusts are manufactured in various size ranges, and a typical commercial dust has an average particle diameter between 4 and 8 p.m. Usually, dusts are screened to be essentially free of particles coarser than 75 p.m (200 mesh). [Pg.415]

Acetylene black is very pure with a carbon content of 99.7%. It has a surface area of about 65 m /g, an average particle diameter of 40 nm, and a very high but rather weak stmcture with a DBPA value of 250 mL/100 g. It is the most crystalline or graphitic of the commercial blacks. These unique features result in high electrical and thermal conductivity, low moisture absorption, and high Hquid absorption. [Pg.547]

The characteristics of roUer process impingement blacks are basically similar to those of channel blacks. They have an acidic pH, a volatile content of about 5%, surface area of about 100 m /g, and an average particle diameter of 10—30 nm. The smaller particle size grades are used as color (pigment) blacks, and the 30-nm grade is used in mbber. [Pg.547]

Average Particle Size A powder has many average sizes hence it is essential that they be well specified. The median is the 50 percent size half the distribution is coarser and half finer. The mode is a high-density region if there is more than one peak in the frequency cui ve, the distribution is said to be multimodal. The mean is the center of gravity of the distribution. The center of gravity of a mass (volume) distribution is defined by. Xyw = X XdV/X dV where dV = X dN dV is the volume of dN particles of size X This is defined as the volume-moment mean diameter and differs from the mean for a number or surface distribution. [Pg.1824]

The results for silver particles show the way in which die average particle size of the spheres modifies the map of the predominating mechanisms which depend on the sphere diameter, a, in differing ways as shown above in the variation in the values of m which can be shown in the form of a general equation... [Pg.207]

The second system studied was the separation of the chiral epoxide enantiomers (la,2,7,7a-tetrahydro-3-methoxynaphth-(2,3b)-oxirane Sandoz Pharma) used as an intermediate in the enantioselective synthesis of optically active drugs. The SMB has been used to carry out this chiral separation [27, 34, 35]. The separation can be performed using microcrystalline cellulose triacetate as stationary phase with an average particle diameter greater than 45 )tm. The eluent used was pure methanol. This is a more advanced partial combustion process. The feed is first preheated and then combusted in the reactor with a limited amount of air. The hot gases containing carbon particles from the reactor are quenched with a water spray and then further cooled by heat exchange with the air used for the partial combustion. The type of black produced depends on the feed type and the furnace temperature. The average particle diameter of the blacks from the oil furnace process ranges between 200-500 A, while it ranges between 400-700 A from the gas furnace process. Figure 4-4 shows the oil furnace black process. [Pg.119]

Average Particle Size (APS) is the weighted average diameter of a catalyst. [Pg.357]

Quality of the adsorbent layer. Layers for HPTLC are prepared using specially purified silica gel with average particle diameter of 5-15 /mi and a narrow particle size distribution. The silica gel may be modified if necessary, e.g. chemically bonded layers are available commercially as reverse-phase plates. Layers prepared using these improved adsorbents give up to about 5000 theoretical plates and so provide a much improved performance over conventional TLC this enables more difficult separations to be effected using HPTLC, and also enables separations to be achieved in much shorter times. [Pg.232]

Commercial preparations of these supports are available in narrow mesh-range fractions to obtain particles of uniform size the material should be sieved to the desired particle size range and repeatedly water floated to remove fine particles which contribute to excessive pressure drop in the final column. To a good approximation the height equivalent of a theoretical plate is proportional to the average particle diameter so that theoretically the smallest possible particles should be preferred in terms of column efficiency. Decreasing particle size will, however, rapidly increase the gas pressure necessary to achieve flow through the column and in practice the best choice is 80/100 mesh for a... [Pg.238]
