System transport

Mitochondria are surrounded by an inner and an outer membrane (see p. 210). The outer membrane contains porins, which allow smaller molecules up to 10 kDa in size to pass. By contrast, the inner membrane is also impermeable to small molecules (with the exception of water and the gases O2, CO2, and NH3). All of the other substrates of mitochondrial metabolism, as well as its products, therefore have to be moved through the inner membrane with the help of special transporters. [Pg.212]

The transport systems of the inner mitochondrial membrane use various mechanisms. Metabolites or ions can be transported alone (uniport, U), together with a second substance (symport, S), or in exchange for another molecule (antiport. A). Active transport—i. e., transport coupled to ATP hydrolysis—does not play an important role in mitochondria. The driving force is usually the proton gradient across the inner membrane (blue star) or the general membrane potential (red star see p. 126). [Pg.212]

Two systems known as shuttles are available to allow the import of reducing equivalents that arise from glycolysis in the cytoplasm in the form of NADH+HT There is no transporter in the inner membrane for NADH+H itself [Pg.212]

In the malate shuttle (left)—which operates in the heart, liver, and kidneys, for example-oxaloacetic acid is reduced to malate by malate dehydrogenase (MDH, [2a]) with the help of NADH+HT In antiport for 2-oxogluta-rate, malate is transferred to the matrix, where the mitochondrial isoenzyme for MDH [2b] regenerates oxaloacetic acid and NADH+HT The latter is reoxidized by complex I of the respiratory chain, while oxaloacetic acid, for which a transporter is not available in the inner membrane, is first transaminated to aspartate by aspartate aminotransferase (AST, [3a]). Aspartate leaves the matrix again, and in the cytoplasm once again supplies oxalo-acetate for step [2a] and glutamate for return transport into the matrix [3b]. On balance, only NADH+H is moved from the cytoplasm into the matrix ATP is not needed for this. [Pg.212]

The carnitine shuttle for transporting acyl residues into the mitochondrial matrix is discussed on p. 164. [Pg.212]

Hydrate formation is possible only at temperatures less than 35°C when the pressure is less than 100 bar. Hydrates are a nuisance they are capable of plugging (partially or totally) equipment in transport systems such as pipelines, filters, and valves they can accumulate in heat exchangers and reduce heat transfer as well as increase pressure drop. Finally, if deposited in rotating machinery, they can lead to rotor imbalance generating vibration and causing failure of the machine. [Pg.173]

The magnitude of the NHV has economic importance because the consumption and cost of motor fuels are frequently expressed in liters/100 km and in Francs/liter in France. From the technical viewpoint, the NHV, establishes the maximum range for a transport system with a given load. This is a decisive criterion for applications like aviation. [Pg.182]

The advent of a portable source of very high energy x-rays has opened up x-ray inspection possibilities in a wide range of environments. Applications include such fields as nuclear waste containers, bridges, nuclear and fossil power plants, surface and airborne transportation systems, space launch systems and other thick section NDT and other inspection problems that cannot be solved imaged using other NDT methods. [Pg.429]

Reactions represent the dynamic aspect of chemistry, the interconversion of chemical compounds. Chemical reactions produce the compounds that are sold by industry and that play a big role in maintaining the standard of living of our society they transform the food that we take up in our body into energy and into other compounds and they provide the energy for surviving in a hostile environment and the energy for a large part of our transportation systems. [Pg.169]

The volatiles contents of product chars decreased from ca 25—16% with temperature. Char (lower) heating values, on the other hand, increased from ca 26.75 MJ /kg (11,500 Btu/lb) to 29.5 MJ /kg (12,700 Btu/lb) with temperature. Chars in this range of heating values are suitable for boiler fuel apphcation and the low sulfur content (about equal to that of the starting coal) permits direct combustion. These char products, however, are pyrophoric and require special handling in storage and transportation systems. [Pg.95]

Milk has been a source for food for humans since the beginning of recorded history. Although the use of fresh milk has increased with economic development, the majority of consumption occurs after milk has been heated, processed, or made into butter. The milk industry became a commercial enterprise when methods for preservation of fluid milk were introduced. The successful evolution of the dairy industry from small to large units of production, ie, the farm to the dairy plant, depended on sanitation of animals, products, and equipment cooling faciUties health standards for animals and workers transportation systems constmction materials for process machinery and product containers pasteurization and sterilization methods containers for distribution and refrigeration for products in stores and homes. [Pg.350]

Calcium is absorbed from the intestine by facilitated diffusion and active transport. In the former, Ca " moves from the mucosal to the serosal compartments along a concentration gradient. The active transport system requires a cation pump. In both processes, a calcium-binding protein (CaBP) is thought to be required for the transport. Synthesis of CaBP is activated by 1,25-DHCC. In the active transport, release of Ca " from the mucosal cell into... [Pg.376]

Sylvinite ore is relatively soft and easily broken. Thus, continuous miners of the boring- or rotating dmm-type can be used. These machines are modified continuous coal miners. This method is used in some of the mines in New Mexico, in all Canadian mines except the solution mines, and in many European mines. Ore is removed from the face by a number of methods, eg, with extensible belt conveyor ore-loading machines and shuttle cars to the main haulage line. To obtain maximum benefits from the continuous miners, the ore transport system must be as nearly continuous as possible. [Pg.524]

Ammonia is usually transported for long distances by barge, pipeline, and rail, and for short distances by tmck Eactors that govern the type of carrier used in anhydrous ammonia transportation systems are distance, location of plant site in relation to consuming area, availabihty of transportation equipment, and relative cost of available carriers. Typical costs (83) of pipeline, barge, and rail modes for long distance transport are 0.0153, 0.0161, and 0.0215 per ton per kilometer, respectively, for distances of about 1600 km. Short distance tmck transportation costs (83) are much higher. Costs are typically 0.0365/(t km) for distances on the order of 160 km. [Pg.356]

Biochemically, most quaternary ammonium compounds function as receptor-specific mediators. Because of their hydrophilic nature, small molecule quaternaries caimot penetrate the alkyl region of bdayer membranes and must activate receptors located at the cell surface. Quaternary ammonium compounds also function biochemically as messengers, which are generated at the inner surface of a plasma membrane or in a cytoplasm in response to a signal. They may also be transferred through the membrane by an active transport system. [Pg.378]

Distribution of the scoured wool to the cards then occurs. This is often done using a combination of pneumatic and mechanical transport systems, usually with the provision of accumulator bins that hold a few hour s production. Modem cards are usually fed with tower feeds, which automatically control the height of the wool column. [Pg.345]

Another style tries to place process tanks such that those most sensitive to drippage problems and cross-contamination are placed in parts of the in-line layout where they would be least troublesome. The transport system is then programmed to take the work in a nonsequential order, skipping over stations and backtracking in order to complete the plating cycle. The carrying of work over other bars tends to leave salt buildup on the superstmcture of the work bars, and potential contamination of any and all tanks in the line depending on which station the salt buildup eventually drops into. [Pg.145]

Some alcohols, eg, propylene glycol, not only lower water activity but also have an additional preservative effect caused by the way they interfere with the ceU membrane transport system of the contaminating microorganisms. Surfactants (qv) may show a similar effect. [Pg.290]

Distribution costs depend on plant location, physical state of the material (whether liquid, gas, or sohd), nature of the material (whether corrosive, explosive, flammable, perishable, or toxic), freight rates, and labor costs. Distribution costs may be affected by any of the following new methods of materials handling, safety regulations, productivity agreements, wage rates, transportation systems, storage systems, quality, losses, and seasonal effects. [Pg.817]

The micas, as a class, are difficult to grind to a fine powder one exception is disintegrated schist, in which the mica occurs in minute flakes. For diy grinmng, hammer mills equipped with an air-transport system are generally used. Maintenance is often high. It has been established that the method of milling has a definite effect on the par-... [Pg.1869]

Scale-up depends on the mechanical complexity of the crystal-transport system and techniques for removing heat. Vertical oscillating spiral columns are likely limited to about 0.2 m in diameter, whereas horizontal columns of several meters are possible. Scale-up is limited by design of melter and/or crystal-washing section. Vertical or horizontal columns of several meters in diameter are possible. [Pg.1993]

Pneumatic Transport Both low-pressure air-vacuum conduit transport systems have been used to transport sohd wastes. The most common application is the transport or wastes from high-density apartments or commercial activities to a central location for processing or for loading into transpoii vehicles. The largest pneumatic system in use in the United States is at the Walt Disney World amusement park in Orlando, Florida. [Pg.2241]

Waters While MIC-causing bacteria may arrive at the surface of their corrosion worksite by almost any transportation system, there is always water present to allow them to become ac tive and cause MIC to occur. There are plenty of examples of even superpure waters having sufficient microorganisms present to feed, divide, and multiply when even the smallest trace of a viable food-stuff is present (e.g., the so-called watei for injection in the pharmaceutical industiy has been the observed subject of extensive corrosion of pohshed stainless steel tanks, piping, and so on). [Pg.2421]

Many structures require that a beam sustain a certain force F without deflecting more than a given amount, 8. If, in addition, the beam forms part of a transport system - a plane or rocket, or a train - or something which has to be carried or moved - a rucksack for instance - then it is desirable, also, to minimise the weight. [Pg.70]
