Your health and safety policy statement sets out how you manage health and safety in your organisation. It is a unique document that shows who does what and when and how they do it. [Pg.2]

The health and safety policy statement is your starting point to managing health and safety in the workplace. By law, (Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 section 2(3)) if you employ five or more people you must have a written health and safety policy. The management of risk is a strategic approach to health and safety that organisations must adopt in order to control the hazards that employees, contractors, community residents and others are exposed to. It requires more than just a focus on the hazard itself. The control of hazards requires organisational and administrative processes in order to be effective. Those processes need to be in place to influence the behaviours of directors, managers, supervisors and employees so that harm does not occur. They should also be bound together by a policy and their effectiveness established by measurement, review and audit. The law establishes a minimum standard for the requirements of any health and safety policy. Section 2(3) of the HSWA requires that every employer prepare and revise a written statement of his general policy for the management of health and safety.
