Environmental concerns

Traditional pretreatment processes are often characterized by high water and energy consumption as well as large consumption of chemical and textile auxiliaries with consequence high environmental negative impacts. In recent years, there have been [Pg.218]

The use of waste minimization approach to pollution control in pretreatments offers environmental and economical advantages over effluent treatment namely [88] [Pg.219]

The key opportunities for pollution prevention in pretreatment of cellulosic substrates are as follows [100,88,162]  [Pg.219]

The consumption of fossil fuels spawns environmental considerations in addition to issues of energy demand, national security, and resource availability. At the global level, scientists warn that the combustion of fossil fuels is significantly changing the world s climate system. Local or regional concerns include smog, acid rain, and health implications of urban air pollution. [Pg.95]

A diverse array of evidence points to a warming of global surface air temperatures. Instrumental records from land stations and ships indicate that global mean surface air temperature warmed about 0.4 to 0.8°C (0.7-1.5°F) during the 20 Century (NRC 2001). [Pg.95]

Greenhouse gases include water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxides, and several largely man-made chemicals, including the halocarbons (chlorofluorocarbons [CFCs] and hydrofluorocarbons [Pg.95]

As a result of human activities ranging from the combustion of fossil fuels to the use of nitrogen-based fertilizers to large-scale deforestation, concentrations of key GHGs are increasing. Increased concentrations of CO2 coincided with the onset of the Industrial Revolution in the 1860s and the use of fossil fuels. Based on an analysis of ice cores, scientists [Pg.96]

There are numerous issues that influence the current and future state of flame-retardant plastics. This is particularly evident in Europe, where regulatory and [Pg.699]

In North America, DBDPO is still the dominant flame retardant used for HIPS, whereas in Europe alternative flame retardants such as Saytex 8010 and FR-1808 are preferred. Mixtures of these flame retardants are used in the exporting countries of the East, depending on the global region in which the flame-retardant plastic will be used. [Pg.700]

As one can see, the future of flame retardant use in plastics is currently in a state of flux. It will be interesting to see what this industry looks like in 2010. [Pg.700]

Flame-retardant styrenic polymers find utility in applications such as building insulation (expanded polystyrene foam) and electronic enclosures (flame-retardant HIPS, ABS and styrenic blends). The most effective flame retardants are halogen-(particularly bromine)-containing compounds these flame retardants act by inhibiting the radical combustion reactions occurring in the vapor phase. Flame-retardant plastics are in a state of flux, due to influences of [Pg.700]

The cardinal rule for proper disposal of any organic solvent also applies to the aliphatic carboxylic acids. Do not dump any solvent into any sewers, on the ground, or into any body of water. [Pg.73]

The following section outlines some of the current environmental concerns in the world s mature oil and gas development areas. [Pg.73]

Providing the land surfaoe above a reservoir is relatively flat, it is generally cheaper to drill and maintain a vertical well than to access a reservoir from a location that requires a deviated borehole. In unpopulated areas such as desert or jungle looations It is common to find that the pattern of wellheads at surface closely reflects the pattern In which wells penetrate the reservoir. However, in many eases constraints will be planed on drill site availability as a result of housing, environmental concerns or topography. In such conditions wells may be drilled in clusters from one or a number of sites as elose as possible to the surface location of the reservoir. [Pg.260]

Care must be used in handling lead as it is a cumulative poison. Environmental concerns with lead poisoning has resulted in a national program to eliminate the lead in gasoline. [Pg.86]

Chemistry does not always enjoy the best of reputations. Many of our plants and refineries are still potentially dangerous and may pollute their surroundings. At the same time our society enjoys a high standard of living not in small measure through the results of chemistry, which few would give up. I believe that chemistry can and will be able to bring about an equilibrium between mankind s needs and our environmental concerns. Chemistry will continue to benefit mankind in the spirit of Alfred Nobel, a fellow chemist whose example continues to inspire us all. [Pg.183]

Residual monomers in SAN have been a growing environmental concern and can be determined by a variety of methods. Monomer analysis can be achieved by polymer solution or directly from SAN emulsions (27) followed by "head space" gas chromatography (gc) (28,29). Liquid chromatography (Ic) is also effective (30). [Pg.192]

Synthetic Processes. Traditional Solvay plants produce large volumes of aqueous, chloride-containing waste which must be discharged. This fact, in addition to a noncompetitive cost position, is largely responsible for the demise of U.S. synthetic plants. In countries other than the United States, waste is sent to the ocean, rivers, or deep underground wells. The AC and NA coproduct processes produce less aqueous waste than the traditional Solvay and NA mono processes. Related environmental concerns are added whenever a plant complex includes lime quarries and ammonia-producing equipment. [Pg.527]

The abatement of fluorine emissions and disposal of by-product calcium sulfate from phosphoric acid plants are environmental concerns. [Pg.226]

A typical m el ter iastalled in a medium sized brass foundry contains 4500 kg of brass and its inductor is rated 500 kilowatts. Brass is an alloy containing copper and zinc. Zinc vaporizes at temperatures weU below the melting temperature of the alloy. The channel iaductor furnace s low bath temperature and relatively cool melt surface result in low metal loss and reduced environmental concerns. Large dmm furnaces have found use in brass and copper continuous casting installations. [Pg.131]

There are environmental concerns over the use of HE catalyst. The refining industry has taken steps to reduce the likelihood of an accidental release and to minimizp the environmental impact in the event of a release. As a result of these environmental concerns, most new units use sulfuric acid catalysts. [Pg.185]

Amalgamation, which was once widely used, has been largely discontinued because of inefficiency and environmental concerns. Gold in association with metals such as copper, nickel, and lead, generally follows these in the concentration process and eventually can be separated and recovered. [Pg.378]

Developments in hydiaulic fluids are driven by environmental concerns including disposal of waste, waste rninirnization, biotoxicity, effects on human... [Pg.266]

Comparison to the Raschig Process. The economics of this peroxide process in comparison to the Raschig or hypochlorite—ketazine processes depend on the relative costs of chlorine, caustic, and hydrogen peroxide. An inexpensive source of peroxide would make this process attractive. Its energy consumption could be somewhat less, because the ketazine in the peroxide process is recovered by decantation rather than by distillation as in the hypcochlorite process. A big advantage of the peroxide process is the elimination of sodium chloride as a by-product this is important where salt discharge is an environmental concern. In addition to Elf Atochem, Mitsubishi Gas (Japan) uses a peroxide process. [Pg.285]

Pressure sensitive adhesives typically employ a polymer, a tackifier, and an oil or solvent. Environmental concerns are moving the PSA industry toward aqueous systems. Polymers employed in PSA systems are butyl mbber, natural mbber (NR), random styrene—butadiene mbber (SBR), and block copolymers. Terpene and aUphatic resins are widely used in butyl mbber and NR-based systems, whereas PSAs based on SBR may require aromatic or aromatic modified aUphatic resins. [Pg.358]

Waste Treatment. Environmental concerns have increased the need to treat Hquid discharges from all types of industrial processes, as well as mnoffs where toxic substances appear as a result of leaks or following solubilization (see Wastes, industrial). One method of treatment consists of an ion-exchange system to remove the objectionable components only. Another involves complete or partial elimination of Hquid discharges by recycling streams within the plant. This method is unacceptable unless a cycHc increase in the impurities is eliminated by removing all constituents prior to recycling. [Pg.388]

The future use of lead may be decided by the resolution of an environmental paradox. Some markets for lead are being phased out because of environmental concerns, eg, the use of tetraethyllead as a gasoline additive. However, a 1990 State of California law and similar laws in nine eastern U.S. states require that 2% of new cars meet 2ero-emission standards in 1998. By 2003 this requirement rises to 10% of new vehicles. Zero emission vehicles are generally accepted to mean electric, ie, battery powered cars, and there is considerable research effort to bring suitable electric vehicles to market by 1998. [Pg.51]

The primary environmental concern for the coating plant is actually the residual material on the anode stmctures being returned for recoating. Therefore the anode user must enact effective cleaning procedures prior to shipment. For example, anodes in chlorine use must be cleaned of all traces of mercury and asbestos (qv). Anodes used in electrogalvanizing or in copper-foil production must similarly be cleaned to remove all traces of process materials. If cleaning at the user s plant is not done effectively, the anode may well be shipped back to the user for appropriate action before it is considered for recoating. [Pg.124]
