Long-range

The use of Lamb waves offers the possibility of rapid long-range in-service inspection. Receiver and transmitter probes are positioned single sided - access is only required from one side of the specimen - in a pitch-catch-arrangement, the receiver being outside tbe field of the specular reflection. [Pg.845]

There has been much activity in the study of monolayer phases via the new optical, microscopic, and diffraction techniques described in the previous section. These experimental methods have elucidated the unit cell structure, bond orientational order and tilt in monolayer phases. Many of the condensed phases have been classified as mesophases having long-range correlational order and short-range translational order. A useful analogy between monolayer mesophases and die smectic mesophases in bulk liquid crystals aids in their characterization (see [182]). [Pg.131]

CS. The true two-dimensional crystal with chains oriented vertically exists at low T and high ir in the CS phase. This structure exhibits long-range translational order. [Pg.134]

Since the development of grazing incidence x-ray diffraction, much of the convincing evidence for long-range positional order in layers has come from this technique. Structural relaxations from distorted hexagonal structure toward a relaxed array have been seen in heneicosanol [215]. Rice and co-workers combine grazing incidence x-ray diffraction with molecular dynamics simulations to understand several ordering transitions [178,215-219]. [Pg.135]

Grazing incidence excitation of a fluorescent probe in a phospholipid monolayer can also be used to indicate order. The collective tilt of the molecules in a domain inferred from such measurements is indicative of long-range orientational order [222]. [Pg.136]

The discussion focuses on two broad aspects of electrical phenomena at interfaces in the first we determine the consequences of the presence of electrical charges at an interface with an electrolyte solution, and in the second we explore the nature of the potential occurring at phase boundaries. Even within these areas, frequent reference will be made to various specialized treatises dealing with such subjects rather than attempting to cover the general literature. One important application, namely, to the treatment of long-range forces between surfaces, is developed in the next chapter. [Pg.169]

Generally speaking, intermolecular forces act over a short range. Were this not the case, the specific energy of a portion of matter would depend on its size quantities such as molar enthalpies of formation would be extensive variables On the other hand, the cumulative effects of these forces between macroscopic bodies extend over a rather long range and the discussion of such situations constitutes the chief subject of this chapter. [Pg.225]

To first order, the dispersion (a-a) interaction is independent of the structure in a condensed medium and should be approximately pairwise additive. Qualitatively, this is because the dispersion interaction results from a small perturbation of electronic motions so that many such perturbations can add without serious mutual interaction. Because of this simplification and its ubiquity in colloid and surface science, dispersion forces have received the most significant attention in the past half-century. The way dispersion forces lead to long-range interactions is discussed in Section VI-3 below. Before we present this discussion, it is useful to recast the key equations in cgs/esu units and SI units in Tables VI-2 and VI-3. [Pg.231]

If the cylinders are of different radii, then a = (0102). In these cases, U(x) has a simple inverse dependence on x, so that the attraction is, indeed, long-range. [Pg.233]

While the confirmation of the predicted long-range dispersion attraction between surfaces in air has been a major experimental triumph, the forces between particles in solution are of more general interest in colloid and surface chemistry. The presence of a condensed medium between the surfaces... [Pg.239]

All the long-range forces discussed in this chapter play a role in biological processes. Interactions between membranes, proteins, ligands, antibodies... [Pg.246]

It is thus seen that the dipole-induced dipole propagation gives an exponential rather than an inverse x cube dependence of U x) with x. As with the dispersion potential, the interaction depends on the polarizability, but unlike the dispersion case, it is only the polarizability of the adsorbed species that is involved. The application of Eq. VI-43 to physical adsoiption is considered in Section XVII-7D. For the moment, the treatment illustrates how a long-range interaction can arise as a propagation of short-range interactions. [Pg.249]

The long-range van der Waals interaction provides a cohesive pressure for a thin film that is equal to the mutual attractive force per square centimeter of two slabs of the same material as the film and separated by a thickness equal to that of the film. Consider a long column of the material of unit cross section. Let it be cut in the middle and the two halves separated by d, the film thickness. Then, from one outside end of one of each half, slice off a layer of thickness d insert one of these into the gap. The system now differs from the starting point by the presence of an isolated thin layer. Show by suitable analysis of this sequence that the opening statement is correct. Note About the only assumptions needed are that interactions are superimposable and that they are finite in range. [Pg.250]

C. Long-Range Forces as a Factor in Emulsion Stability... [Pg.506]

Some studies have been made of W/O emulsions the droplets are now aqueous and positively charged [40,41 ]. Albers and Overbeek [40] carried out calculations of the interaction potential not just between two particles or droplets but between one and all nearest neighbors, thus obtaining the variation with particle density or . In their third paper, these authors also estimated the magnitude of the van der Waals long-range attraction from the shear gradient sufficient to detach flocculated droplets (see also Ref. 42). [Pg.508]

The immediate site of the adsorbent-adsorbate interaction is presumably that between adjacent atoms of the respective species. This is certainly true in chemisorption, where actual chemical bond formation is the rule, and is largely true in the case of physical adsorption, with the possible exception of multilayer formation, which can be viewed as a consequence of weak, long-range force helds. Another possible exception would be the case of molecules where some electron delocalization is present, as with aromatic ring systems. [Pg.591]
