Another Possibility

Another possibility to improve selectivity is to reduce the concentration of monoethanolamine in the reactor by using more than one reactor with intermediate separation of the monoethanolamine. Considering the boiling points of the components given in Table 2.3, then separation by distillation is apparently possible. Unfortunately, repeated distillation operations are likely to be very expensive. Also, there is a market to sell both di- and triethanolamine, even though their value is lower than that of monoethanolamine. Thus, in this case, repeated reaction and separation are probably not justified, and the choice is a single plug-flow reactor. [Pg.51]

Find a way to overcome the constraint while still maintaining the areas. This is often possible by using indirect heat transfer between the two areas. The simplest option is via the existing utility system. For example, rather than have a direct match between two streams, one can perhaps generate steam to be fed into the steam mains and the other use steam from the same mains. The utility system then acts as a buffer between the two areas. Another possibility might be to use a heat transfer medium such as a hot oil which circulates between the two streams being matched. To maintain operational independence, a standby heater and cooler supplied by utilities is needed in the hot oil circuit such that if either area is not operational, utilities could substitute heat recovery for short periods. [Pg.184]

Sulfur comes mainly from the decomposition of organic matter, and one observes that with the passage of time and of gradual settling of material into strata, the crude oils lose their sulfur in the form of H2S that appears in the associated gas, a small portion stays with the liquid. Another possible origin of H2S is the reduction of sulfates by hydrogen by bacterial action of the type desulforibrio desulfuricans (Equation 8.1) ... [Pg.321]

The immediate site of the adsorbent-adsorbate interaction is presumably that between adjacent atoms of the respective species. This is certainly true in chemisorption, where actual chemical bond formation is the rule, and is largely true in the case of physical adsorption, with the possible exception of multilayer formation, which can be viewed as a consequence of weak, long-range force helds. Another possible exception would be the case of molecules where some electron delocalization is present, as with aromatic ring systems. [Pg.591]

Another possibility is that a system may be held in a constrained equilibrium by external forces and thus be in a non-equilibrium steady state (NESS). In this case, the spatio-temporal correlations contain new ingredients, which are also exemplified in section A3.3.2. [Pg.716]

Another possibility to represent the quantum mechanical Lagrangian density is using the logarithm of the amplitude X = Ina, a = e. In that particular representation, the Lagrangean density takes the following symmetrical fomi... [Pg.161]

In a photochemical experiment, irradiation of benzene leads to Sj, which connects to the ground-state surface via the conical intersection shown. Benzene, the much more stable species, is expected to be recovered preferentially, but the prebenzvalene structure which hansfomis to benzvalene is also fomied. Another possible route from the prebenzvalene, along a different coordinate, will lead to fulvene [90, p.357] after a hydrogen-atom transfer from... [Pg.373]

Another possibility for asymmetric reduction is the use of chiral complex hydrides derived from LiAlH. and chiral alcohols, e.g. N-methylephedrine (I. Jacquet, 1974), or 1,4-bis(dimethylamino)butanediol (D. Seebach, 1974). But stereoselectivities are mostly below 50%. At the present time attempts to form chiral alcohols from ketones are less successful than the asymmetric reduction of C = C double bonds via hydroboration or hydrogenation with Wilkinson type catalysts (G. Zweifel, 1963 H.B. Kagan, 1978 see p. 102f.). [Pg.107]

Methyl 6-hydroxy-3-methylhexanoate is our 1,6-difunctional target molecule. Obvious precursors are cyclohexene and cyclohexadiene derivatives (section 1.14). Another possible starting material, namely citronellal, originates from the "magic box of readily available natural products (C.G. Overberger, 1967, 1968 E.J. Corey, 1968D R.D. Clark, 1976). [Pg.206]

The cyclization of the enediynes 110 in AcOH gives the cyclohexadiene derivative 114. The reaction starts by the insertion of the triple bond into Pd—H to give 111, followed by tandem insertion of the triple bond and two double bonds to yield the triene system 113, which is cyclized to give the cyclohexadiene system 114. Another possibility is the direct formation of 114 from 112 by endo-rype. insertion of an exo-methylene double bond[53]. The appropriately structured triyne 115 undergoes Pd-catalyzed cyclization to form an aromatic ring 116 in boiling MeCN, by repeating the intramolecular insertion three times. In this cyclization too, addition of AcOH (5 mol%) is essential to start the reaction[54]. [Pg.485]

Another possible route to 2-unsubstituted thiazoles is replacement of a mercapto group by a hydrogen. Various methods have been used hydrogen peroxide in acid medium (17-19) dilute nitric acid (17), and metallic catalysts (20-22). [Pg.340]

Even if It could be shown that RNA preceded both DNA and proteins in the march toward living things that doesn t automatically make RNA the first self replicating molecule Another possibility is that a self replicating polynucleotide based on some carbo hydrate other than o ribose was a precursor to RNA Over many generations natural selection could have led to the replacement of the other carbohydrate by D ribose giving RNA Recent research on unnatural polynucleotides by Professor Albert Eschenmoser of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Zurich) has shown for example that nucleic acids based on L threose possess many of the properties of RNA and DNA... [Pg.1177]

Polystyrene has a high heating value, 46,000 kj/kg compared to heating oil, 44,000 kj/kg (46). Thus, incineration for its energy value is another possible appHcation for recovered polystyrene. [Pg.231]

Another possible route for producing formaldehyde is by the dehydrogenation of methanol (109—111) which would produce anhydrous or highly concentrated formaldehyde solutions. Eor some formaldehyde users, minimization of the water in the feed reduces energy costs, effluent generation, and losses while providing more desirable reaction conditions. [Pg.494]

Membranes and Osmosis. Membranes based on PEI can be used for the dehydration of organic solvents such as 2-propanol, methyl ethyl ketone, and toluene (451), and for concentrating seawater (452—454). On exposure to ultrasound waves, aqueous PEI salt solutions and brominated poly(2,6-dimethylphenylene oxide) form stable emulsions from which it is possible to cast membranes in which submicrometer capsules of the salt solution ate embedded (455). The rate of release of the salt solution can be altered by surface—active substances. In membranes, PEI can act as a proton source in the generation of a photocurrent (456). The formation of a PEI coating on ion-exchange membranes modifies the transport properties and results in permanent selectivity of the membrane (457). The electrochemical testing of salts (458) is another possible appHcation of PEI. [Pg.14]

Another possible advantage of the PHB method is its potential multiplexing characteristics by synchronous recording and read-out, exceptional data transfer rates can be achieved. These high transfer rates are of equal importance in practical data technology as high storage densities. [Pg.155]

As of this writing (1997), researchers are exploring combinations of acids, additives, and catalysts to achieve a suitable economic finish. However, commercial appHcation of these finishes would require costs akin to that of DMDHEU as well as compliance with formaldehyde release levels by consumers, regulators, and the textile industry. Another possible impetus could be marketing considerations. Nevertheless, this work has sparked intense effort in the use of cross-linkers containing ester cross-links and has broadened the scope of cross-linker research. [Pg.447]

Another approach, the so-called seeding technique, provides preferential sites for the nucleation of scale, which permits the heat-transfer surfaces to remain clean of scale. Extensive studies of this technique have been conducted, and field use was reported ia the former USSR as early as the mid-1960s (42). The use of ion-exchange methods is another possible approach. Eor calcium, the exchange can be represented as... [Pg.241]

Another possible modification is the use of seawater as the regenerant. Even though it contains calcium and magnesium, but only 2.7 wt % NaCl, it sometimes can be purified by coagulation, filtration, and chlorination less expensively than salt can be purchased. The lower concentration reduces the regeneration efficiency by 40—50%. [Pg.280]

It is likely that ara-HxMP similarly exerts its antiviral activity in the form of the triphosphate, ara-HxTP, since ara-HxTP inhibits HSV-1 DNA polymerase (49). Another possible explanation of the antiviral activity of ara-HxTP is that it is metaboHcaHy converted to ara-AMP. In fact, it has been shown at Wellcome Research Laboratories that ara-HxMP is a substrate for adenylosuccinate synthetase, and that the resulting arabinofuranosyladenylosuccinate is cleaved to ara-AMP by adenylosuccinate lyase (1). The selective action of ara-A against HSV appears to be a consequence of the preferential inhibition of ara-ATP against HSV-1 and HSV-2 polymerases. Ara-ATP also inhibits normal cellular DNA polymerases, which may be the reason for its cellular toxicity. Also, it has been observed that ara-A is incorporated uniformly throughout the HSV-1 genome, which may result in defective viral DNA (50). [Pg.307]

Methane, chlorine, and recycled chloromethanes are fed to a tubular reactor at a reactor temperature of 490—530°C to yield all four chlorinated methane derivatives (14). Similarly, chlorination of ethane produces ethyl chloride and higher chlorinated ethanes. The process is employed commercially to produce l,l,l-trichloroethane. l,l,l-Trichloroethane is also produced via chlorination of 1,1-dichloroethane with l,l,2-trichloroethane as a coproduct (15). Hexachlorocyclopentadiene is formed by a complex series of chlorination, cyclization, and dechlorination reactions. First, substitutive chlorination of pentanes is carried out by either photochemical or thermal methods to give a product with 6—7 atoms of chlorine per mole of pentane. The polychloropentane product mixed with excess chlorine is then passed through a porous bed of Fuller s earth or silica at 350—500°C to give hexachlorocyclopentadiene. Cyclopentadiene is another possible feedstock for the production of hexachlorocyclopentadiene. [Pg.508]

StiU another possible role of supersaturation is that it affects the solution stmcture and causes the formation of clusters of solute molecules. These clusters may participate in nucleation, although the mechanism by which this would occur is not clear. Evidence of the existence of cluster formation in supersaturated solutions has been presented for citric acid (21) while others have examined the phenomenon in greater detail (22,23). [Pg.343]

The Overall Process. Each distillation column should be examined in context with the rest of the process as well as by itself. For example, an opportunity for energy saving may be a reduction of process recycles via a purer overhead or bottoms stream. Lowering or raising column pressure to facihtate interchange with other parts of the process is another possible opportunity. [Pg.230]

Isopropyl Ether. Isopropyl ether is manufactured by the dehydration of isopropyl alcohol with sulfuric acid. It is obtained in large quantities as a by-product in the manufacture of isopropyl alcohol from propylene by the sulfuric acid process, very similar to the production of ethyl ether from ethylene. Isopropyl ether is of moderate importance as an industrial solvent, since its boiling point Hes between that of ethyl ether and acetone. Isopropyl ether very readily forms hazardous peroxides and hydroperoxides, much more so than other ethers. However, this tendency can be controlled with commercial antioxidant additives. Therefore, it is also being promoted as another possible ether to be used in gasoline (33). [Pg.429]

The resonance integral of the 7r-bond between the heteroatom and carbon is another possible parameter in the treatment of heteroatomic molecules. However, for nitrogen compounds more detailed calculations have suggested that this resonance integral is similar to that for a C—C bond and moreover the relative values of the reactivity Indices at different positions are not very sensitive to change in this parameter. [Pg.5]

Another possibility is that both nitrogen atoms react with a double alkylating agent. In this way fused pyrazole derivatives (pyrazolo[l,2-a]pyrazoles) like (237) can be obtained by reaction of 3,5-dimethylpyrazole with 1,3-dichloropropane or l-chloro-3-propanol (69BSF2064). More surprising is the reaction with a-chlorocarbonylphenylketene which yields the paraionic compound (238) (80JA3971) which can also be obtained from 3,5-dihydroxy-4-phenylpyrazole and /3-dicarbonyl compounds (82JOC295). [Pg.230]

If the pyrazolone is unsubstituted on position 1, there is still another possibility lead tetraacetate oxidation of (397) yields the oxopyrazolenine (398) (73CRV93) which is a very reactive azadienophile (73JCS(P1)221). [Pg.253]
