Long range elasticity

The smectic A phase is a liquid in two dimensions, i.e. in tire layer planes, but behaves elastically as a solid in the remaining direction. However, tme long-range order in tliis one-dimensional solid is suppressed by logaritlimic growth of tliennal layer fluctuations, an effect known as tire Landau-Peierls instability [H, 12 and 13]... [Pg.2546]

The contrast in knowledge is a result of the degree of complexity of materials properties elastic piezoelectric solids have perhaps the least complex behaviors, whereas ferroelectric solids have perhaps the most complex mechanical and electrical behaviors of any solid under shock compression. This complexity is further compounded by the strong coupling between electrical and mechanical states. Unfortunately, much of the work studying ferroelectrics appears to have underestimated the difficulty, and it has not been possible to carry out careful, long range, systematic efforts required to develop an improved picture. [Pg.113]

Another effect of elastic deformation is that it causes a long-range interaction between steps. From the continuum elasticity theory, two steps sepa-rated by a distance have a repulsive interaction proportional to l for homo- and to In i for hetero-epitaxial cases, respectively [84]. This interaction plays an important role, for example, in step fluctuations, terrace width distribution, step bunching, and so forth [7,85-88]. [Pg.880]

The performance of VASP for alloys and compounds has been illustrated at three examples The calculation of the properties of cobalt dislicide demonstrates that even for a transition-metal compound perfect agreement with all-electron calculations may be achieved at much lower computational effort, and that elastic and dynamic properties may be predicted accurately even for metallic systems with rather long-range interactions. Applications to surface-problems have been described at the example of the. 3C-SiC(100) surface. Surface physics and catalysis will be a. particularly important field for the application of VASP, recent work extends to processes as complex as the adsorption of thiopene molecules on the surface of transition-metal sulfides[55]. Finally, the efficiciency of VASP for studying complex melts has been illustrate for crystalline and molten Zintl-phases of alkali-group V alloys. [Pg.80]

The transition temperatures which we find for the austenite - martensite transition in simulations without vacancies, are much to low. The introduction of vacancies lead to much more physical results, while the martensite - austenite transition is not affected by vacancies. From this we conclude that vacancies lower the energy barrier which the system has to overcome during the transition. The reason for this might be a weakening of long-range elastic couplings in the lattice. [Pg.98]

It is concluded that the cooperative effect observed is of long-range nature and therefore of elastic rather than of electronic origin. Recently, the additional suggestion has been made [138] that, due to intermolecular interactions in the crystal environment of [Fe(ptz)g](BF4)2, domains of iron(II) complexes interconvert together. The observed kinetics would then correspond to a first- or higher-order phase transition rather than to the kinetics which are characteristic for the conversion of isolated molecules. [Pg.107]

The ability to image defects in crystals which contain long-range elastic strains as each point on the specimen selects its own appropriate wavelength band for diffraction. [Pg.245]

Most cases are well understood by now. Additional work seems to be needed for clarifying the flattening of gratings below roughening in the case of surface diffusion.- It is also desirable to elucidate the effect of (long-range) step-step interactions, induced, for example, by elastic forces, on step fluctuations. [Pg.156]
