Parameters long-range order parameter

A switch to double-angle vectors given by Eq. (2.3.12) not only significantly simplifies the treatment of orientation phase transitions in planar systems of nonpolar molecules but also leads to a number of substantial inferences on the transition nature. First of all note that the long-range-order parameter t] (vanishing in a disordered phase and equal to unity at T = 0) in a -dimensional space (specified by the orientations of long molecular axes) can be defined as ... [Pg.45]

The assignment of the order of the herringbone transition was discussed in the literature over many years. The LEED results [92, 93] (see Fig. 26) were consistent with an interpretation in terms of a first-order transition with pronounced rounding elfects. However, these data could not mle out a continuous transition so that this study was not accurate enough to decide the order of the transition. In addition, there is the problem to relate the LEED superlattice spot intensities to the proper long-range order parameter of the system [93, 108] (see the presentation in Section III.D.l). [Pg.291]

It must be emphasized, however, that the treatment presented in Eqs. (68)-(80) is too restrictive since it considers a simple diffusive relaxation only such a treatment applies to solid binary mixtures ( model B in the Hohenberg-Halperin [144] classification), while in a fluid binary mixture it is necessary to include the long range order parameter fluctuations that are transmitted by velocity fluctuations [145]. The resulting model model H in the Hohenberg-Halperin classification leads to a renormalization of the Onsager coefficient A(q) due to mode-coupling effects [146]. Equation [77] remains valid but A(q) is replaced by... [Pg.204]
