Understanding long-range

Since the development of grazing incidence x-ray diffraction, much of the convincing evidence for long-range positional order in layers has come from this technique. Structural relaxations from distorted hexagonal structure toward a relaxed array have been seen in heneicosanol [215]. Rice and co-workers combine grazing incidence x-ray diffraction with molecular dynamics simulations to understand several ordering transitions [178,215-219]. [Pg.135]

Hydrodynamic interaction is a long-range interaction mediated by the solvent medium and constitutes a cornerstone in any theory of polymer fluids. Although the mathematical formulation needs somewhat elaborate methods, the idea of hydrodynamic interaction is easy to understand suppose that a force is somehow exerted on a Newtonian solvent at the origin. This force sets the surrounding solvent in motion away from the origin, a velocity field is created which decreases as ... [Pg.91]

The possibility of a barrier which inhibits a reaction in spite of the attractive ion-dipole potential suggests that one should make even crude attempts to guess the properties of the potential hypersurface for ion reactions. Even a simple model for the long range behavior of the potential between neutrals (the harpoon model ) appears promising as a means to understand alkali beam reactions (11). The possibility of resonance interaction either to aid or hinder reactions of ions with neutrals has been suggested (8). The effect of possible resonance interaction on cross-sections of ion-molecule reactions has been calculated (25). The resonance interaction would be relatively unimportant for Reaction 2 because the ionization potential for O (13.61 e.v.) is so different from that for N2 (15.56 e.v.). A case in which this resonance interaction should be strong and attractive is Reaction 3 ... [Pg.30]

New optical (static as well as dynamic) techiuques for the stndy of long-range order in stractured continna are begiiming to appear and can be used to understand the constitutive properties and relations in complex (polymeric, nematic, and other stmctured) fluids. [Pg.179]

Electrochemistry is, with its combination of simple fluids and ions, a natural area of application for the GvdW theory. Here there is an obvious need to understand both the short-range fluids, the long-range electrolyte solutions and their properties in bulk and at interfaces. We hope this review can provide a useful tool for electrochemists and many others with communal interests and stimulate further progress in a field rich in fluid phenomena and mechanisms. [Pg.118]

The analogy drawn between -stacked solids and duplex DNA has provided a useful starting point for experiments to probe and understand DNA-medi-ated CT. As with the -stacked solids, the DNA base pair array can provide an effective medium for long range CT. Mechanistically, however, the differences between DNA and these solid state materials may be even more important to consider. Duplex DNA, as a molecular -stacked structure, undergoes dynamical motion in solution. The time-dependent and sequence-dependent structures that arise serve to modulate and gate CT. Indeed in probing DNA CT as a function of sequence and sequence-dependent structure, we may better understand mechanistically how CT proceeds and how DNA CT may be utilized. [Pg.121]
