Here the chromophores can be farther apart (10-100 A long-range interactions) since this mechanism does not require any overlapping of orbitals. The Forster radius designates the distance between donor and acceptor at which the efficiency of energy transfer amounts to exactly 50%. Half of the excited donor molecules are then deactivated by fluorescence resonance energy transfer, and the other 50% by fluorescence or phosphorescence. 

To summarize, two important factors controlling the rates of energy transfer involving vibration and rotation are resonance and long-range interactions. The combination of lasers and microwave techniques can be used to study a wide array of vibrational and rotational energy transfer processes. 

For the case of excitation of IF(X) by NF(b S) Herbelin [36] has developed a model to explain the IF(B) vibrational distribution. The model assumes that the dominant forces in the energy transfer come from long-range interactions in which a resonant energy transfer between NF and IF is followed by a charge transfer in which the resulting ion pair (NF - IF+) then separates to give NF(X) and IF(B). The final IF(B) vibrational distribution depends on the IF(B-X) Franck-Condon factors...
