Long-range predictions

The social matrix within which any emergent tool inhere will determine the nature of its use. Much more important however, in terms of long-range prediction, is the means by which the information about the tool is transferred. The mechanical process that breaks down a total situation into discrete units allows for a slow dissemination of partial product along a linear chain, unlike an electrical network, which provides for instantaneous transmission of information within mosaic structure whose extent is limitless.

While the confirmation of the predicted long-range dispersion attraction between surfaces in air has been a major experimental triumph, the forces between particles in solution are of more general interest in colloid and surface chemistry. The performance of VASP for alloys and compounds has been illustrated at three examples The calculation of the properties of cobalt dislicide demonstrates that even for a transition-metal compound perfect agreement with all-electron calculations may be achieved at much lower computational effort, and that elastic and dynamic properties may be predicted accurately even for metallic systems with rather long-range interactions. Therefore, we predict that for a system with any finite misfit, a uniform film with a thickness greater than several monolayers is not the equilibrium state the system can lower the chemical potential by the formation of clusters. Clusters will form on either the bare substrate (Volmer-Weber mode any finite misfit with WKl and large misfits if W >1) or on a few layers of uniform film (Stranski-Krastanov mode up to moderate misfits with W>1). This will be true for any system without long-range (e.g. electrostatic) forces. 

The relatively short predicted half-life of trichloroethylene in the atmosphere indicates that long-range global transport is unlikely (Class and Ballschmiter 1986). However, its constant release, as well as its role as an intermediate in tetrachloroethylene degradation, may account for its persistence and the fact that trichloroethylene is often present in remote areas.
