International pollution long range transport

Observations of the long-range transport of atmospheric pollutants, organized within the framework of some international programs such as IGAC, facilitated the discovery of a number of effects, among which the following should be mentioned ... [Pg.72]

Over the last three decades the debate on air pollution control has assumed both national and international dimensions. With the establishment and quantification of the long-range transport of air pollutants in the mid-1970s, air pollution and acid rain have been seen as an international problem leading to increased research into the impact of air pollutants on the environment. [Pg.457]

On the basis of available data which indicated that airborne pollutants were transported distances of hundreds of kilometers, the Nordic countries decided in 1970 to propose the OECD conduct a study of the transport of air pollutants. The OECD in 1972 adopted a "Co-operative Technical Programme to Measure the Long Range Transport of Air Pollutants." This programme covering Northwest Europe focussed primarily on sulphur dioxide and sulphur compounds and was concluded in 1977 after confirming that these compounds do travel hundreds of kilometers across international borders. [Pg.477]

The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, an international treaty, defines a chemical as persistent if its half-life in water is greater than two months, or the half-life in soil or sediment is greater than six months additionally, a chemical is considered to have the potential for long-range transport in air if its half-life (in air) is greater than two days. A high... [Pg.10]
