Phenols may be separated from acids (for example, o-cresol from benzoic acid) by a dilute solution of sodium bicarbonate the weakly acidic phenols (and also enols) are not converted into salts by this reagent and may be removed by ether extraction or by other means the acids pass into solution as the sodium salts and may be recovered after acidification. Aldehydes, e.g., benzaldehyde, may be separated from liquid hydrocarbons and other neutral, water-insoluble hquid compounds by shaking with a solution of sodium bisulphite the aldehyde forms a sohd bisulphite compound, which may be filtered off and decomposed with dilute acid or with sodium bicarbonate solution in order to recover the aldehyde. [Pg.1091]

Fertilization of ponds to increase productivity is the next level of intensity with respect to fish culture, followed by provision of supplemental feeds. Supplemental feeds are those that provide some additional nutrition but caimot be depended upon to supply all the required nutrients. Provision of complete feeds, those that do provide all of the nutrients required by the fish, translates to another increase in intensity. Associated with one or more of the stages described might be the appHcation of techniques that lead to the maintenance of good water quaUty. If poUed, most aquaculturists would probably indicate a preference for well water. Both freshwater and saline wells are common sources of water for aquaculture. The most commonly used pretreatments of well water include temperature alteration (either heating or cooling) aeration to add oxygen or to remove or oxidize such substances as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and iron and increasing salinity (in mariculture systems). Others would include the addition of materials aimed at increa sing the bioavailabiUty of the contaminant to the degrading organisms. The most studied compounds are surfactants, but cations have been reported to increase the bioavailabiUty of some organic compounds, and sorbents and clays are also considered.
