The most significant conventional apphcation of MCFCs is in the distributed generation of electric energy in small to medium sized stationary power plants. This application wiU be described first and then the innovative applications proposed or already developed wiU be outlined. [Pg.86]

Poly(acrylic acid) and Poly(methacrylic acid). Poly(acryHc acid) (8) (PAA) may be prepared by polymerization of the monomer with conventional free-radical initiators using the monomer either undiluted (36) (with cross-linker for superadsorber appHcations) or in aqueous solution. Photochemical polymerization (sensitized by benzoin) of methyl acrylate in ethanol solution at —78° C provides a syndiotactic form (37) that can be hydrolyzed to syndiotactic PAA. From academic studies, alkaline hydrolysis of the methyl ester requires a lower time than acid hydrolysis of the polymeric ester, and can lead to oxidative degradation of the polymer (38). Po1y(meth acrylic acid) (PMAA) (9) is prepared only by the direct polymerization of the acid monomer it is not readily obtained by the hydrolysis of methyl methacrylate. [Pg.317]

Higher alkyl acrylates and alkyl-functional esters are important in copolymer products, in conventional emulsion appHcations for coatings and adhesives, and as reactants in radiation-cured coatings and inks. The depressed prices of most metals in world markets in the 1980s and early 1990s have slowed the development of new metal extraction processes, although the search for improved extractants continues. There is a growing interest in the use of extraction for recovery of metals from effluent streams, for example the wastes from pickling plants and electroplating (qv) plants (276). Recovery of metals from Hquid effluent has been reviewed (277), and an AM-MAR concept for metal waste recovery has recentiy been reported (278). Possible appHcations exist in this area for Hquid membrane extraction (88) as weU as conventional extraction. Other schemes proposed for effluent treatment are a wetted fiber extraction process (279) and the use of two-phase aqueous extraction (280). [Pg.81]

In conventional tenter orientation, the sequence of steps is as described above (MD—TD). In some cases it is advantageous to reverse the draw order (TD—MD) or to use multiple draw steps, eg, MD—TD—MD. These other techniques are used to produce "tensilized" films, where the MD tensile properties are enhanced by further stretching. The films are generally unbalanced in properties and in extreme cases may be fibrillated to give fiber-like elements for special textile appHcations. Tensilized poly(ethylene terephthalate) is a common substrate for audio and video magnetic tape and thermal transfer tape. [Pg.381]

The actual flotation phenomenon occurs in flotation cells usually arranged in batteries (12) and in industrial plants and individual cells can be any size from a few to 30 m in volume. Column cells have become popular, particularly in the separation of very fine particles in the minerals industry and coUoidal precipitates in environmental appHcations. Such cells can vary from 3 to 9 m in height and have circular or rectangular cross sections of 0.3 to 1.5 m wide. They essentially simulate a number of conventional cells stacked up on top of one another (Fig. 3). Microbubble flotation is a variant of column flotation, where gas bubbles are consistently in the range of 10—50 p.m. [Pg.41]

From the standpoint of commercialization of fuel ceU technologies, there are two challenges initial cost and reHable life. The initial selling price of the 200-kW PAFC power plant from IFC was about 3500/kW. A competitive price is projected to be about 1500/kW orless for the utiHty and commercial on-site markets. For transportation appHcations, cost is also a critical issue. The fuel ceU must compete with conventional mass-produced propulsion systems. Furthermore, it is not clear if the manufacturing cost per kilowatt of small fuel ceU systems can be lower than the cost of much larger units. The life of a fuel ceU stack must be five years minimum for utiHty appHcations, and reHable, maintenance-free operation must be achieved over this time period. The projection for the PAFC stack is a five year life, but reHable operation has yet to be demonstrated for this period. [Pg.586]
