A total of 15,000—17,000 t of resin is used aimuaHy. Polycarbonate also has many technical uses in instmment panels and devices, especiaHy for membrane switches and insulators. Optical quaHty polycarbonate is the only suitable material for the compact disk market. Since their introduction in 1983, compact disks have shown explosive growth in the consumption of polycarbonate, with utiHty for audio, video, and computer appHcations. Consumption of optical quaHty resin more than doubled between 1988 and 1992, and as of 1995 accounted for about 20,000 t of annual production. 

The FDA has been interested in Web enablement of computer apphcations. Several inspections questioned client controls for intranet and Internet access. The FDA also appears to be looking more critically at distribution systems for pharmaceutical and healthcare products. The MHRA has noted that validation requirements for distribution systems are generally not well understood and consequently the vahdation of these systems is often deficient. Distribution systems are vital components of the supply chain and companies should address their validation accordingly. In particular, focus should be placed on validating product return and recall processes. 

This chapter examines varions validation strategies that can be adopted around organizational roles, outsourcing, standardizing computer apphcations and software reuse, segregating GxP aspects of integrated systems, retrospective validation of legacy systems, and use of statistical techniques to support validation. 

An example of one type of tool frequently used in project management is a list of items that, when completed, would signify the completion of a project dehverable—a punch list is one such hst that is regularly used to this day in construction projects. More and more, these tools are being incorporated into computer apphcations. In this section, we wiU take a look at tools that are available, or are being constructed, to automate the concentric circle processes.

To Sinn up, TPM s secure storage and certificate infrastructure can protect keys from theft and provide user-fiiendly management of certificates. This way, threats of certificate and key compromise can be reduced. Unfortunately, there are not any commercial appHcations offering these services to end users, yet. However, TPM is present on most of the computers and its specifications are pubhc, so a feasible base exists to develop trusted computing appHcations.

Those seeking careers in parallel computing take a wide variety of positions. A few go to work for companies that develop hardware such as Intel, AMD, and Cray. Others go to work for companies that build system software such as Cray or IBM, or develop parallel computing apphcations for a wide range of organizations.

After approaches to the solution of the major tasks in chemoinformatics have thus been outlined, these methods are put to work in specific applications. Some of these apphcations, such as structure elucidation on the basis of spectral information, reaction prediction, computer-assisted synthesis design or drug design, are presented in Chapter 10. 

For a variety of appHcations such as computer-aided engineering systems, software development, or hypermedia, the relational database model is insufficient. In an RDBMS, it is difficult to model complex objects and environments the various extensive tables become complicated, the integrity is problematic to observe, and the performance of the system is reduced. This led to two sophisticated object-based models, the object-oriented and the object-relational model, which are mentioned only briefly here. For further details see Refs. [10] and [11]. 

There are several excellent publications in the literature which compare force fields, their apphcation areas, and their pros and cons [1-5]. Available force field parameters are published in a comprehensive and very extensive form, e.g., within the R views in Computational Chemistry series [6, 7j.

Exposure to a flavor over time always results in a decrease in the perceived intensity. This dynamic effect of flavorants, called adaptation, is a central part of the process by which people experience flavors in foods as well as in sensory tests. Measuring the dynamics of flavor perception is an emerging technology made possible by inexpensive computing. Called time-intensity analysis, these methods are finding wide appHcations in taste analysis. 

Tracer Type. A discrete quantity of a foreign substance is injected momentarily into the flow stream and the time interval for this substance to reach a detection point, or pass between detection points, is measured. From this time, the average velocity can be computed. Among the tracers that have historically been used are salt, anhydrous ammonia, nitrous oxide, dyes, and radioactive isotopes. The most common appHcation area for tracer methods is in gas pipelines where tracers are used to check existing metered sections and to spot-check unmetered sections. 

Du Pont called this new lubricant material Krytox (64,65) and initially it had such extraordinary properties that it sold for 200/kg ( 187kg ca 1993). Krytox was and is used ia most of the vacuum pumps and diffusion oil pumps for the microelectronics iadustry ia this country and ia Japan because it produces no hydrocarbon (or fluorocarbon) vapor contamination. It has also found important appHcations ia the lubrication of computer tapes and ia other data processiag appHcations as weU as military and space appHcations.
