High density polyethylene apphcations

Hyperfom HPN 210 M is a new nucleating agent for injection molded high-density polyethylene apphcations. It improves mechanical performance to the levels approaching those of polypropylene impact copolymers. It increases stiffness by up to 50%, heat distortion temperature by 10-40°C, and productivity. It has ability to create lamellar crystal orientation of PE in the polymer flow direction reducing shrinkage. ... 

Structural Components. In most appHcations stmctural foam parts are used as direct replacements for wood, metals, or soHd plastics and find wide acceptance in appHances, automobUes, furniture, materials-handling equipment, and in constmction. Use in the huil ding and constmction industry account for more than one-half of the total volume of stmctural foam appHcations. High impact polystyrene is the most widely used stmctural foam, foUowed by polypropylene, high density polyethylene, and poly(vinyl chloride). The constmction industry offers the greatest growth potential for ceUular plastics. 

Low- and high-density polyethylene, polypropene, and polymers of other alkene (olehn) monomers constitute the polyolefin family of polymers. All except LDPE are produced by coordination catalysts. Coordination catalysts are also used to produce linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), which is essentially equivalent to LDPE in structure, properties, and apphcations (Sec. 8-1 Ic). The production figures given above for LDPE do not include LLDPE. The production of LLDPE now exceeds that of LDPE, with about 10 billion pounds produced in 2001 in the United States. Pigment Red 242 is used in a broad variety of plastics and fiber appHcations, where it provides scarlet coloration with excellent fastness properties. Warping, however, makes it unsuitable for high density polyethylene injection molding. It finds application in inks and to some extent in industrial paints. The relatively new Pigment Red 262 is recommended mainly for rigid PVC, polyolefins, and fibers, where it affords a strong bluish red.

Commodity chemical producers have varying records of performance in appHcations research. It is usually high on the priority Hst when the product is stiU evolving, eg, low density polyethylene in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In times of pinched profit margins, these services often have been dropped, sometimes to be reinstituted, especially if totally new uses appeared.
