Safe work practices, SEMS

The SEMS requirements to do with safe work practices are described and discussed below. 

What criteria must be documented in my SEMS program for safe work practices... 

Your SEMS program must establish and implement safe work practices designed to minimize the risks associated with operating, maintenance, and modification activities and the handling of materials and substances that could affect safety or the environment. Your SEMS program must also document contractor selection criteria. When selecting a contractor, you must obtain and evaluate information r arding the contractor s safety and environmental performance. 

Operators must ensure that contractors have their own written safe work practices. Contractors may adopt appropriate sections of the operator s SEMS program. Operator and contractor must document their agreement on appropriate contractor safety and environmental policies and practices before the contractor begins work at the operator s... 

All activities performed by the Contractor will be conducted in accordance with the requirements in the Operator s SEMS program and the Contractor s Safe Work Practices ... 

The Contractor has Safe Work Practices (SWP) for all work, except domestic services (janitorial, food, beverage, laundry, housekeeping), and these are consistent with the Operator s SEMS ...

More broadly, the difficulties that the operators experienced with the man—machine interface showed that safe work practices require a good understanding of human factors issues (even though this topic is not explicidy identified in Table 2.5 as being one of the elements of a SEMS program). 

Routine personnel changes are handled through other elements of SEMS, including operating procedures, safe work practices, and training.
