Adhesion Applications

Adhesives are not used Just for structural applications on modern aircraft. In fact, the number of non-structural applications of adhesives vastly outnumbers the structural applications. Adhesives are used for everything from assembling lavatory walls to attaching the No Smoking sign to cabin partitions. Just a sampling of adhesive types and applications are discussed below. [Pg.1185]

A profile of methylene chloride is presented including US production capacities, demand, growth rate, price, uses, strength, weakness and outlook. Paint stripping and removal accounts for 30% of MeC by end-use application, adhesives 20%, metal cleaning 10%, aerosols 10%, pharmaceuticals 10%, chemical processing 10% and flexible PU foams 5%. Because of occupational concerns, users of MeC are under pressure to limit use, restrict... [Pg.72]

Adhesives are used in everyday applications. Adhesives may be in liquid form or thick pastes. Their main mechanism is based on the polymerization or crosslinking of polymers, which gives rise to glue or other adhesive application. The degree of adhesion of such a process is determined by conventional technological tests. [Pg.223]

This gum is used as a bulk laxative, as an agent for forming emulsions and suspensions, and as a dental and stoma applicance adhesive. [Pg.20]

Scanning Probe microscopy techniques are extremely useful for analysing surfaces, but cannot lead to bulk information. They will be used each time surface properties are important, i.e. when surfaces are used for themselves (tribological applications, adhesion, etc.). However, in some cases, the study of transport phenomena (such as thermal or electrical conductivity) by modified AFM may lead to bulk characterisation such as the formation of a percolating nanotube network for instance. [Pg.76]

The principal type of shear test specimen used in the industry, the lap shear specimen, is 2.54 cm wide and has a 3.23-cm 2 overlap bonded by the adhesive. Adherends are chosen according to the industry aluminum for aerospace, steel for automotive, and wood for construction applications. Adhesive joints made in this fashion are tested to failure in a tensile testing machine. The temperature of test, as well as the rate of extension, are specified. Results are presented in units of pressure, where the area of the adhesive bond is considered to be the area over which the force is applied. Although the 3.23-cm2... [Pg.231]

PDMS is an unusual macromolecular amphiphile composed of pendant organic methyl groups along the siloxane backbone. Its surface properties result in a wide variety of applications. Specific examples are listed in Table I (3), which demonstrates the diversity of interfaces at which PDMS-containing materials are active and the apparently contradictory nature of many of the applications adhesion and release, foaming and antifoaming, etc. [Pg.706]

This material is approved by the FDA, as specified 21CFR in the following applications adhesives and polymers in food contact in the following polymers petroleum hydrocarbon resins, polyethylene, and polybutadiene. [Pg.90]

Applications Adhesives Adhesives Bonds High-purity... [Pg.1025]

MAJOR PRODUCT APPLICATIONS adhesives, caulks, sealants, inks, paints, coatings, EMI control, gaskets, decoration, plating, composites, building products, computers, pastes for electronics, stucco, arts and crafts, smoke detectors, covers, printers, copiers... [Pg.108]

Methods of adhesive application Adhesives may be applied in several ways, as follows. [Pg.334]

Major applications Adhesives, surface coatings, encapsulating and moulding compounds when reinforced, boat, vehicle and aircraft parts, patterns and moulds for shaping thermoplastics, sports equipment. [Pg.238]

For many applications, adhesives are formulated and tailored around specific products and environments. Among these are the ground communication and control equipment for the military that must withstand a wide spectrum of harsh terrestrial climates in addition to high levels of shock and vibration. Spacecraft electronics will be subjected to high vacuum, low temperatures, and particle bombardment from both radioactive and physical particles. Other specific applications include memory modules, automotive, flat-panel displays, optoelectronics, LEDs, MEMS, and EMI shielding. [Pg.242]

A true synthetic natural rubber was introduced in the mid-1960s with the exact same chemical structure as latex tapped from a tree. The difference is that natural rubber comes with a variety of other ingredients in the latex that can both add and detract from performance, while polyisoprene is considered relatively pure. In addition, there are some differences in molecular weight distribution that impact performance. Available in both latex and solid forms, this elastomer can be directly substituted for natural rubber in many applications. Adhesives which are not cured tend to have higher creep values than natural rubber, but also exhibit lower tack and green strength properties. Vulcanized adhesive products perform equal to cured natural rubber adhesive products. [Pg.525]

Cellulose derivatives have found industrial applications for over 150 years. They have been used in such a wide-ranging application adhesives, building materials, inks, and munitions. Within the health and wellness area, cellulose derivatives have a long history of use as binders, coatings, viscosity modifiers, and release modifiers. This entry will present the chemistry of cellulose ethers a key class of cellulose derivatives and the clinical benefits they bring to food and pharmaceutical products. [Pg.517]

MAJOR APPLICATIONS Adhesives, food, pharmaceutical, gels and foams, coating, and biodegradable packaging films. [Pg.18]
