Safe Work Austraha (2011) Work-Related Traumatic Injury Fatalities, Australia 2008-09 (Canberra, ACT Safe Work Australia). [Pg.215]

Australia adopted this approach with the National Occupational Health and Safety Strategy in 2002. The strategy involved the Commonwealth, six states, and two territories. A publication by Safe Work Australia illustrates how to manage workplace safety and health under the overall approach. The implementation extends to worker levels using risk analysis and the hierarchy of controls. Figure 5-1 provides an example of a worker-level card to help in decision-making. [Pg.51]

Risk can be defined as the possibility that harm (death, injury or illness) might occur when exposed to a hazard (Safe Work Australia, 2011). Figure 2 shows the proposed risk-based approach for eliminating and/or managing the occupational hazards associated with the handling of drilling wastes in the harsh, remote and sensitive Arctic environment. The proposed risk-based approach... [Pg.1331]

The organizations that actually pay for medicines — governments, insurers and so on—have only recently started to use the power conferred by their expenditure. A consequence is that a drug company has not only to show that its new product is safe and works, but also that it is cost-effective. In Australia, this has been spelled out in legislation. Since 1993, any drug submitted for approval there must be accompanied not only by the results of clinical trials but also by an economic impact analysis. In 1999 the UK set up a National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) to advise the National Health Service on the cost-effectiveness of health care technologies. Other countries ask formally or informally for pharmacoeconomic analysis. Economic impacts can be measured in a variety of ways, for example, cost-effectiveness, cost-utility or fuU cost-benefit studies. [Pg.743]

In many applications it is necessary to produce a safety case outline by the operator prior to developing a safety case. (Ref MHF regulation). MHF stands for major hazard facilities (such as oil refinery, chemical plants). MHF regulation is applicable for working in these facilities in Australia, and for working safe in these areas there are some obligations to be met with. In UK similar regulation is in place in the name of control of major accident hazards (COMAH). [Pg.115]
