Their Impact

A number of complex chemical compounds (e.g., pesticides, vapors and fumes, automobile exhausts, petroleum distillates, foundry fumes, heterocyclic amines, solid particles) have caused adverse effects to humans and environment. Some persistent contaminants have originated from industrial sources. For example, DDT, mirex, PCBs, dioxin, and others have been traced in the atmosphere as toxic depositions causing concern to human health.3 [Pg.2]

According to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District in San Francisco, more than 5.5 million pounds of toxic chlorinated substances are released in the area annually. This includes approximately 13,000 pounds of chloroform, 1.4 million pounds of freon, 2 million pounds of perchloromethylene, and trace amounts of dioxin. (Dioxin is one of the most toxic chemicals known.) A report released in September 1994 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) clearly describes dioxin as a serious public health threat. The public health impact of dioxin may rival the impact that DDT had on public health in the 1960s. According to the EPA report, not only does there appear to be no safe level of exposure to dioxin, but levels of dioxin and similar chemicals have been found in the U.S. population that are at or near levels associated with adverse health effects. The EPA report also confirmed that dioxin is a cancer hazard, exposure [Pg.2]

The Niagara River has been a focus since 1987 as a major source of environmental contaminants. Both the U.S. and Canadian environmental agencies have made rigorous efforts to reduce pollution of toxic substances. Further, the EPA and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation identified 26 U.S. hazardous sites. The Niagara River Toxic Management Plan (NRTMP) has named several toxic chemicals, 10 of which are considered of major concern (Table 1-1). [Pg.3]

With the extensive use of pest control chemicals in agriculture and industry, residues of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been discovered to elicit toxicological effects on aquatic organisms and wildlife. It is well known that these compounds are lipophilic (meaning attraction to fat [Pg.4]


The parametric method is an established statistical technique used for combining variables containing uncertainties, and has been advocated for use within the oil and gas industry as an alternative to Monte Carlo simulation. The main advantages of the method are its simplicity and its ability to identify the sensitivity of the result to the input variables. This allows a ranking of the variables in terms of their impact on the uncertainty of the result, and hence indicates where effort should be directed to better understand or manage the key variables in order to intervene to mitigate downside and/or take advantage of upside in the outcome. [Pg.168]

One significant feature of the Parametric Method is that it indicates, through the (1 + K 2) value, the relative contribution of each variable to the uncertainty in the result. Subscript i refers to any individual variable. (1 + K ) will be greater than 1.0 the higher the value, the more the variable contributes to the uncertainty in the result. In the following example, we can rank the variables in terms of their impact on the uncertainty in UR. We could also calculate the relative contribution to uncertainty. [Pg.169]

Some exceptionally gifted researchers have made contributions to the topics we discuss here, and their impact on these and other areas of inquiry have earned them special recognition. Specifically, we note that Einstein,. Svedberg, Staudinger, and Flory have all been awarded the Nobel Prize, and Stokes and Poiseuille have been honored by having units named after them. The aroma of fmit, the taste of candy, and the texture of bread are examples of flavor perception. In each case, physical and chemical stmctures ia these foods stimulate receptors ia the nose and mouth. Impulses from these receptors are then processed iato perceptions of flavor by the brain. Attention, emotion, memory, cognition, and other brain functions combine with these perceptions to cause behavior, eg, a sense of pleasure, a memory, an idea, a fantasy, a purchase. These are psychological processes and as such have all the complexities of the human mind. Flavor characterization attempts to define what causes flavor and to determine if human response to flavor can be predicted. The ways ia which simple flavor active substances, flavorants, produce perceptions are described both ia terms of the physiology, ie, transduction, and psychophysics, ie, dose-response relationships, of flavor (1,2). Progress has been made ia understanding how perceptions of simple flavorants are processed iato hedonic behavior, ie, degree of liking, or concept formation, eg, crispy or umami (savory) (3,4). However, it is unclear how complex mixtures of flavorants are perceived or what behavior they cause. Flavor characterization involves the chemical measurement of iadividual flavorants and the use of sensory tests to determine their impact on behavior. [Pg.1]

Shampoos have been prepared in various forms, and have included systems that are thick and thin, clear and opaque, pourable Hquids, soflds, gels, pastes, powders, flakes, and aerosol types. In many cases, shampoos have been prepared and directed for various hair types, eg, normal, dry, damaged, and color treated. Most marketed shampoos (ca 1993) are primarily clear Hquid and opaque lotion types gel and paste forms also are available. When a forest system is subjected to acid deposition, the foliar canopy can initially provide some neutralizing capacity.
