The industrial source of indole has been isolation from coal-tar distillate (7). Several patents for the manufacture of indole have been issued with aniline and ethylene glycol (8), aniline and ethylene oxide (9), 2-ethy1ani1ine (10), and /V-ethy1ani1ine (11) as the starting materials. 

Although the naturally occurring concentration of ozone at the earth s surface is low, the distribution has been altered by the emission of pollutants, primarily by automobiles but also from industrial sources which lead to the formation of ozone. The strategy for controlling ambient ozone concentrations arising from automobile exhaust emissions is based on the control of hydrocarbons, CO, and NO via catalytic converters. As a result, peak ozone levels in Los Angeles, for instance, have decreased from 0.58 ppm in 1970 to 0.33 ppm in 1990, despite a 66% increase in the number of vehicles. 

Industry sources indicate worldwide production of hydrogen peroxide and sodium perborate mono- and tetrahydrate, which are used almost exclusively for bleach appHcations, is 1.1 x 10 t per year and 6.4 x 10 t per year, respectively, in 1990. 

Tetraacetylethylenediarnine (T AFP) perborate activator production has been estimated by industry sources to be 54,000 t to 63,600 t per year as of 1990. The production is located solely in Western Europe where the product is consumed. No estimates of the perborate activator nonanoyloxyben2ene sulfonate production volumes are available because it is captive chemical of the Procter Gamble Co.

Typical Generation Rates Typical unit waste-generation rates for selected industrial sources are reported in Table 25-54. Because waste-generation practices are changing so rapidly, the presentation of typical waste-generation data may not be rehable.

Mercury is widespread in the environment, originating both from natural (natural gassing of the Eailh s cmst, leaching from rocks) and industrial sources (e.g. production of caustic soda and chlorine, electrical industry, biocides, etc.). 

Experimental values for tire sputtering efficiency tend to show lower values of a for elements, such as aluminium and mngsten which form stable oxides, compared with the metals such as gold and platinum which do not under normal experimental conditions. This is probably due to the presence of a surface oxide, since industrial sources of argon, which are used as a source of ions for example, usually contain at least 1 ppm of oxygen, which is more than enough to oxidize aluminium and tungsten.

The movement of fluoride through the atmosphere and into a food chain illustrates an air-water interaction at the local scale (<100 km) (3). Industrial sources of fluoride include phosphate fertilizer, aluminum, and glass manufacturing plants. Domestic livestock in the vicinity of substantial fluoride sources are exposed to fluoride by ingestion of forage crops. Fluoride released into the air by industry is deposited and accumulated in vegetation. Its concentration is sufficient to cause damage to the teeth and bone structure of the animals that consume the crops.

These regulahons will apply to an estimated 34,000 "major" industrial sources. "Major" sources are defined according to their "potential to emit" and the cutoff levels vary depending on both the pollutant and the local areas compliance status with the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for that pollutant. For the present, the EPA has exempted all "nonmajor" sources, of which there are estimated to be about 350,000, from this permithng, unhl they have studied further the feasibility of permithng them. However, the states can require permitting of some of these sources. 

Because of the foregoing requirements, a sophisticated organization is needed to do an effective job of new installation control. Prototype testing is best handled at the national level installation testing and plan examinations at the state, provincial, or regional level. Location of owners is a local operation with respect to residential and commercial structures but may be a state or provincial operahon for industrial sources.
