Environmental impact statements

Ecological risk assessments and human health risk assessments follow similar processes, but they differ in important ways. Discuss three differences that you think are significant. [Pg.166]

Choose three ecological values that are important to you and articulate management goals for them. [Pg.166]

Craft assessment endpoints for each of the management goals that you articulated in Question 2. [Pg.166]

What is a conceptual model diagram, and why is it useful in an ecological risk assessment  [Pg.166]

Name the three major classes of ecological stressors and give at least one example of each. [Pg.166]

The results of the assessment are documented in an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which discusses the beneficial and adverse impacts considered to result from the activity. The report is one component of the information upon which the decision maker ultimately makes a choice. A final decision can be made with due regard being paid to the likely consequences of adopting a particular course of action, and where necessary by introducing appropriate monitoring programs. [Pg.71]

National Environmental Policy Act, 1969 The National Environmental Pohcy Act (NEPA) of 1969 was the first federal act that required coordination of federal projects and their impacts with the nation s resources. The act specified the creation of Council on Environmental Quahty in the Executive Office of the President. This body has the authority to force eveiy federal agency to submit to the council an environmental impact statement on eveiy activity or project which it may sponsor or over which it has jurisdic tion. [Pg.2162]

Stationary monitoring networks are also operated to determine the impact of new sources of emissions. As part of the environmental impact statement and Prevention of Significant Deterioration processes, the projected impact of a new source on existing air quality must be assessed. Air quality monitoring is one means of making this type of assessment. A monitoring network... [Pg.216]

In planning a drilling operation, the location and access are primarily keyed to environmental decisions. The access and location must be able to maintain the traffic load, and also mitigate any impact on local resources such as flora, fauna, cultural and aesthetic. In certain instances, the preparation of an environmental assessment followed by a environmental impact statement may be considered warranted due to proximate ... [Pg.1343]

To determine whether human testing for a new drug or new drug product is reasonable, it is first necessary to conduct preclinical studies and to submit the IND. The necessary information needed to prepare the IND is outlined in Table 1. The IND is to contain information on appropriate prior animal studies for safety evaluation, any available clinical data, adequate drug identification and manufacturing instructions, and a detailed outline of the proposed clinical study, routs of administration, approximate number of patients to be used, and an estimate of the length of treatment and an environmental impact statement. [Pg.630]

NEPA was the major environmental legislation representing the nation s commitment to protect and maintain environmental quality. This act introduced the requirement that environmental impact statements be prepared on all federal actions. [Pg.179]

Risk analysis and risk management play an important role in public policy. These debates range from the development of environmental impact statements for the location of buildings to debates on household lead abatement and what chemicals can be allowed in the food supply. Quality of life issues such as asthma and/or loss of mental function are now recognized as important components of risk assessment. [Pg.33]
