Though Dow deserves credit for taking a stand at a crucial point in the history of industrial electrochemistry, his cells would not have won any prizes for engineering excellence. Nor did his cells produce recoverable alkali. Billiter, Bell, Castner and Kellner in Europe, and Roberts, LeSueur, Allen, Moore, Gibbs,... 

This book is dedicated to Albert, Jessica and Patricia (CCY) and to all my former graduate students who have carried on the Lehigh tradition of engineering excellence (WLL). 

The properties required by jet engines are linked to the combustion process particular to aviation engines. They must have an excellent cold behavior down to -50°C, a chemical composition which results in a low radiation flame that avoids carbon deposition on the walls, a low level of contaminants such as sediment, water and gums, in order to avoid problems during the airport storage and handling phase. 

The crankcase of a gasoline or diesel engine is in reality a hydrocarbon oxidation reactor oil is submitted to strong agitation in the presence of air at high temperature (120°C) furthermore, metals such as copper and iron, excellent catalysts for oxidation, are present in the surroundings. 

The design of air conditioning systems is a highly specialized branch of engineering. A number of excellent information sources regarding air conditioning are available (1). 

Cyclic ether and acetal polymerizations are also important commercially. Polymerization of tetrahydrofuran is used to produce polyether diol, and polyoxymethylene, an excellent engineering plastic, is obtained by the ring-opening polymerization of trioxane with a small amount of cycHc ether or acetal comonomer to prevent depolymerization (see Acetal resins Polyethers, tetrahydrofuran). 

Growing university research ensures that users and specifiers will continue to become more sophisticated in their methodology and more demanding of manufacturers. Excellent textbooks are available for both students and practicing engineers (53,64). 

Polyamides can claim to have been the first engineering plastics as a result of their excellent combination of mechanical and thermal properties. Despite being iatroduced as long ago as the 1930s, these materials have retained their vitaUty and new appHcations, and iadeed new types of nylon continue to be developed.
