There is more activity in dairy products than anywhere else in the food industry. Ice milk and fro2en yogurt, early leaders in the field, rose rapidly in sales then plummeted. Fat-free ice cream has been marketed, but final results are not yet available. Sales of these products have not cannibalized traditional ice cream (35). Standards for traditional ice cream call for a minimum of 10% butterfat. One fat-free ice cream product is prepared from nonfat milk (skim) and cellulose gum. Fat-free ice creams have encountered strong resistance in some segments of the retail trade. Retailers in Maine and New York, states with important dairy producing industries, refuse to sell such products (36). [Pg.118]

Some spent fuel is also stored at two off-site storage faciHties, one in Illinois and one in upper New York State (which no longer accepts waste). The water in these holding pools acts as a shield preventing release of radioactivity. At some plants, waste is beginning to be stored dry in heavily shielded,... [Pg.92]

Another furnace that does not require fuel preparation is the stoker boiler, which was used by New York State Electric Gas Corporation (NYSEG) in its TDE tests. At NYSEG, the stoker boiler, which has a 1649°C (3000°E) flame temperature (as does the cyclone boiler), has routinely blended low quaUty coal, and more recently, wood chips with its standard coal to reduce fuel costs and improve combustion efficiency. In the tire-chip tests, NYSEG burned approximately 1100 t of tire chips (smaller than 5x5 cm) mixed with coal and monitored the emissions. The company determined that the emissions were similar to those from burning coal alone. In a second test-bum of 1900 t of TDE, magnetic separation equipment removed metal from the resulting ash, so that it could be recycled as a winter traction agent for roadways. [Pg.109]

The value of crude ore produced ia the United States was estimated to average 32.50/t in 1994. Product pricing was reported to vary from 99/t for New York State 200-mesh paint grade to 220/t for ultrafine Montana paint grade. Cosmetic grades were quoted at 263/t. [Pg.301]

A new chapter in the uses of semiconductors arrived with a theoretical paper by two physicists working at IBM s research laboratory in New York State, L. Esaki (a Japanese immigrant who has since returned to Japan) and R. Tsu (Esaki and Tsu 1970). They predicted that in a fine multilayer structure of two distinct semiconductors (or of a semiconductor and an insulator) tunnelling between quantum wells becomes important and a superlattice with minibands and mini (energy) gaps is formed. Three years later, Esaki and Tsu proved their concept experimentally. Another name used for such a superlattice is confined heterostructure . This concept was to prove so fruitful in the emerging field of optoelectronics (the merging of optics with electronics) that a Nobel Prize followed in due course. The central application of these superlattices eventually turned out to be a tunable laser. [Pg.265]

The key innovations in turning optical waveguides (fibres) into a successful commercial product were made by R.D. Maurer in the research laboratories of the Corning Glass Company in New York State. This company was also responsible for introducing another family of products, crystalline ceramics made from glass precursors - glass-ceramics. The story of this development carries many lessons for... [Pg.380]

The simulation of molecular (or atomic) dynamics on a computer was invented by the physicist George Vineyard, working at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York State. This laboratory, whose biography has recently been published (Crease 1999), was set up soon after World War II by a group of American universities. [Pg.469]
