Personal computers have introduced new ways to handle pdvate biblographic and text files. The most important factors to consider to achieve satisfactory results in building a bibhographic or text database are the type of information to be stored and the needs of the user. Types of information include correspondence, research results and documentation, meeting notes, and bibliographic references. Needs of the user to be considered should include the potential number of users of the database, restrictions for the access and display of the information because of privacy or proprietary reasons, and the retrieval mechanisms (eg, by keyword, authority list, controUed vocabulary, author, tide, date, or other document or information attributes). In addition, criteria for selecting and encoding information for the database need to be established. 

Because of the importance of cellulose and the difficulty in unraveling its secrets, several societies (CeUucon, American Chemical Society, and TAPPI) are dedicated to cellulose, lignin, and related molecules, as is at least one journal that is abstracted by Chemicaly hstracts (3). The length of the proceedings of the Tenth Cellulose Conference (1638 pages) (4) indicates the vitaUty and interest in this subject, but research results are pubUshed in many other journals as well. There are also several recent books on cellulose (5—9). Reference 10 is a comprehensive review and is recommended especially for the historical review of proof of chemical stmcture, one of the milestones in organic chemistry.

The latest research results are deliberately not included. That is, this book is a fundamental teaching text, not a monograph on contemporary composite materials and structures topics. Thus, topics are chosen for their importance to the basic philosophy which includes simplicity of presentation and absorbability by newcomers to composite materials and structures. More advanced topics as well as the nuances of covered topics can be addressed after this book is digested.

This review account will summarize latest research results on the design, development and properties of functionalized primary phosphines. In particular, the focus would be centered around recent results from our laboratory on the chemical architecture of heteroatom functionahzed primary bisphosphines. We wiU also discuss synthetic protocols for the formylation reactions of functionalized primary phosphines to produce structurally diverse water-soluble hydroxymethyl phosphines. Finally, we will discuss the utility of carboxylate functionahzed primary bisphosphines for incorporation on to peptides and their potential apphcations in catalysis and biomedicine.

The internet allows the linking of computers which are tuned for database searching (and which may access a world wide database of information, which is not limited by the published literature but also includes research results which are available only on the internet) with computers which are capable of calculating chemical reactivity.
