Research journals

Out of the hundreds of different research periodicals currently being pubhshed, those listed below describe research of special interest to physical chemists. A very complete tabulation of periodicals, the correct abbreviation of their titles, and their distribution in American and selected foreign libraries can be found in Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index. Issues after the mid-1990s of almost all these selected journals are available on the Internet under licenses to research libraries.

The material included in this chapter has been organized by oxidation state, with further subdivision into ligand donor type, and was obtained from reports published in primary research journals. The article will cover coordination complexes of copper in three oxidation states Cum, Cu11, and Cu1. The sections dealing with specific ligand donor types cut across several structural types. In view of the all-inclusive nature of the previous review of CCC(1987), no effort will be made here to present a comprehensive account. Instead, specific cases will be chosen for discussion because they exemplify important concepts concerning the relationship of ligand structure to metal complex properties.

Dr. Mark is acknowledged throughout the scientific community as the father of polymer science. He received the National Medal of Science in 1980, the 1978 Senior U.S. Scientist Award, 29 other medals and awards from various international organizations, and 17 honorary degrees. In 1977, he was appointed as an Honorable Member of the Japan Chemical Society. He has published over 500 original and review articles and some 20 books on topics related to polymer chemistry. Dr. Mark is founder and first editor of the Journal of Polymer Science, the definitive publication in its field, and is currently editor of the Journal of Applied Science and associate editor of the Textile Research Journal. In addition to these duties he serves as Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Encyclopedia of Polymer Science and Technology.

In the same vein, such analytical and biochemical interferences with respect to drug interference in various biomedical assays are being profusely cited in current scientific and research journals, such as the American Journal of Hospital Pharmacy and Clinical Chemistry. 

The data may be the result of original measurements not previously published, data which have been published elsewhere but have been modified to conform to the requirements of IDS B, or compilations gathered from several sources. Thus the International Data Series combines the function of a scientific research journal with those of a data compilation.

The first step in the forward search is to see whether we can find the desired property of the material in a database, which may be a textbook, a handbook, a research journal, or, increasingly, an electronic resource. This method is, in principle, the fastest and least expensive. Properties of materials are measured and first published in research... 

When we need the properties of a chemical compound, such as the boiling point of benzene, the fastest and least expensive method is a forward search from the structure to the properties by consulting a database. The sources of such experimental information are first published in primary research journals, and then pass through professional editors and panels to make their way to secondary textbooks and handbooks. 

The research journals are the primary place where research results are first published. The prices of compounds change rapidly, and are to be found in journals instead of books. The New York Times finance page lists a number of commonly traded metals (aluminum, antimony, copper, gold, iron, lead, mercury, platinum, silver, zinc), food (corn, soya, wheat, rice, sugar), fuels (fuel oil, gasoline, natural gas), and textile (cotton, wool). The Chemical Market Report is a weekly journal that lists the prices of many chemical substances in a supplement, which depend strongly on purity and intended use.
