Hard-copy

A hardcopy of an image can be provided for special occasions. These hard copies are made by a laser printer.

ISI is available in hard copy and electronically at EPA s headquarters and regional Hbraries, and through the National Technical Information Service (NTIS). The electronic form may be installed on IBM PC-compatible computers or placed on local area networks, and mn under Microsoft WINDOWS or WordPerfect s Library program. The Macintosh version is no longer available. The 1993 update will include the ISI hardcopy, PC disks, and the PC system user manual. EPA also pubHshes ACCESS EPA, which provides sources of information, databases, and pubHcations within the EPA. Chapter 5 of that pubhcation includes important environmental databases in air and soHd waste, pesticides and toxic substances, water, and cross-program (110). EPA also provides databases accessible through EPA Hbraries, which describe the private EPA and commercial databases available to Hbrary users (111). 

Extension Toxicology Network, EXTOXNET, 2nd ed., available in hard copy and electronic form from Resource Center, Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., 1994. Contains 139 pesticide information profiles (PIPs), 16 toxicology information briefs (TIBS), and other information on current issues in pesticide toxicology and environmental chemistry. 

The role of chemical technology in printing is also changing. Whereas a need exists for hard copy, whether for visual, legal, or historical reasons, the hard copy must meet new standards of performance, including visual and environmental. Many traditional printing processes have become unacceptable in the workplace, and are being replaced by processes that are water-based, dry, desktop, or in some other ways more convenient.

The networking of personal computers has continued and has enabled the sharing of expensive hard-copy output devices and other peripherals and has provided the significant benefit of faciUtating the transfer of data between computers. Joint authorship of technical articles is a quick and easy process with networked computers. The interappHcation communication that today links appHcations within a single computer will transparentiy link appHcations on networked computers. Voice-annotated documents are already available. 

Subject Categories. The deterrninant for user selection of a database is usually subject matter. That is, when chemical information is desired, a chemical database is selected. The form or media of the database is of secondary importance. The type of search may dictate the need for a full-text or statistical database. If none exists, however, a bibhographic database in the topic area may be used to locate full-text or numeric compilations in hard-copy form. 

The need to obtain color hard copies from electronic systems such as TV and video sets, or from personal computers, has been increasing. Several methods have been proposed to obtain hard copies of full color images. Among them, sublimation thermal-transfer printing has the following characteristics the quaHty of the printed color picture is extremely high, and the equipment is compact, quiet, and easy to manipulate as well as to maintain. 

Operator control stations. These typically consist of color graphics monitors with special keyboards, in addition to a conventional alphanumeric keyboard, containing keys to perform dedicated functions. Operators may supervise and control processes from these stations. A control station may contain a number of printers for alarm logging, report printing, or hard-copying process graphics.

There are literally many thousands of chemical compounds that are potential air pollutants. It would be impossible to present all the pertinent data and information needed to evaluate each and every air pollution scenario. There are, however, a wealth of information and data bases that are available on the worldwide Web, along with a number of standard hard copy references to obtain information on the chemical and physical properties, and health risks of potential atmospheric contaminants. 

The index may be issued or, so as to preclude use of obsolete indices, it may be prudent to keep no hard copies. With organizations that operate on several sites using common documentation it may well be sensible to issue the index so that users have a means of determining the current version of documents. 

It is advisable to identify all your quality records within your procedures. This will avoid arguments on what is or is not a quality record, because once you have chosen to identify a record as a quality record you have invoked all the requirements that are addressed in this chapter. Any document which describes the achieved features and characteristics of a product or service are quality records. Those records which will demonstrate that work has been planned, organized, resourced, monitored, verified, and corrected when found deficient are also quality records. The note following the requirement acknowledges that quality records can be in hard copy or held on a computer disk or magnetic tape. Should both forms be held, you will need to declare which are the masters and provide the appropriate security to prevent inadvertent loss or damage (see below). 

The DS team spent one session compiling a list of the documentation requirements that they were aware of from their individual experiences. This documentation ranged from vessel details and drawings to accident/incident reporting to MSDSs to safety procedures. Many different departments and functions were involved. Some documentation was kept in hard copy form, while the rest was in electronic form but on several different systems. The... 

A listing of visual observations. Most of the microprocessor-based systems support visual observations as part of their approach to predictive maintenance. This report provides hard copies of the visual observations as well as maintaining the information in the computer s database. 

The first method required to monitor the operating condition of plant equipment is to trend the relative condition over time. Most of the microprocessor-based systems will provide the means of automatically storing and recalling vibration and process parameters trend data for analysis or hard copies for reports. They will also automatically prepare and print numerous reports that quantify the operating condition at a specific point in time. A few will automatically print trend reports that quantify the change over a selected time frame. All of this is great, but what does it mean ... 

CADD, a part of CAD, is the computer-assisted generation of working drawings and other documents. The CADD user generates graphics by interactive communication with the computer. The graphics are displayed on a video terminal and can be converted into hard copy by a printer or plotter. 

Polymer and elastomer data are typically producer-specific. Sources therefore tend to be scattered and incomplete. While no single hard-copy source is all encompassing, the following are worth consulting. 

The five hard-copy data-sources listed below attempt in different ways to span the full spectrum of materials and properties. 

All protocol-required data are recorded at the trial site on Case Report Forms (CRFs), which may be in either electronic or hard-copy format. Data for individual subjects are recorded on separate CRFs. The CRFs are used to transfer trial data to the sponsor for analysis and evaluation. 

The headings for an EU submission are shown in Figure 6.7. Specific applications forms, which are available on the Eduralex website, may be completed either electronically or in hard copy. A summary of the information captured by the form is shown in Figure 6.8.
