World Patents

Most databases, e.g. the World Patents Index, provide a "Learn database" function (LWPl) to give the opportunity for training in the specific retrieval strategies for patents. 

The World Patent Index of Derwent Information Ltd. is a broad collection of international value-added patent documents from 40 patent-issuing authorities. The bibliographic database contains 11.6 million patent records with 5.5 million images (October, 2002) and grows by 1.5 million patent documents each year. The classified and indexed documents (since 1963) are sometimes provided wdth additional abstracts or significant titles. 

There is growing commercial importance and escalating scientific interest in PVDF. The World Patent database, including the United States, Hsts 678 patents that cite the term poly(vinyHdene fluoride) for the period 1963—1980 and 2052 patents for the period 1981—1992 Chemical Abstracts files covering the years 1967—1992 contain 5282 references for the same term. Thirty years ago there was only one commercial producer of PVDF in the world now there are two in the United States, two in Japan, and three in Europe.

Even in countries which are not signatories to either the PCT or various regional conventions provided around the world, patent appHcation examination generally foUows a fairly standard pattern. After the first national, home appHcation is filed, subsequent apphcations may then be filed in other countries, within the 12-month time period if such a grace period is provided. If this grace period is not provided, the patent appHcation(s) which are to be filed in non-Paris Convention Countries have to be filed before any event occurs that may destroy the novelty of the invention. Total U.S. surfactant shipments ia 1993 were almost - 5 x 10 kg with a sales value of 3.5 x 10 , a 3% iacrease over 1992 (110). Adjusted for inflation, the actual growth was about 2%, iadicative of a mature market. Nonetheless, the market has changed and will continue to do so, as evidenced by the iatroduction of alkylpolyglucosides, alkylglucosamides, and ester quaternaries ia the 1990s, and by iatense patent activity. Over the three-year period from 1992 to 1994, 1500 world patents were filed for cleaning products, 33% of which dealt with surfactants (63).
