Current awareness of new chemical reactions can. in principle. be organized in databases as for other types of queries, with search profiles that are automatically executed at each database update ( alerts . SDls ). Because of the frequency of updating (see Section 3.2), at present this only makes sense for CASREACT. Although the printed current awareness journals, such as the Journal of Synthetic Methods, Current Chemical Reactions, Methods in Organic Synthesis, and Cheminform RX are all available in electronic form, both as in-house databases for MDL s REACCS or ISIS system, and, with the exception of Current Chemical Reactions and Methods in... 

Computer system of defect assessments as applied to primary circuit piping is developed as the tool of expert ISI strength supporting. Results of defect assessments are governed by adequate data on stress distributions and defect geometry.

The system is to be qualified under the new regulations for ISI in Swedish nuclear plants, SKIPS, during the spring of 98 and the pre-trials for these qualifications has produced very promising results. 

The DART system has been qualified according to the new regulations for ISI issued by the Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate. 

The WLN was applied to indexing the Chemical Structure Index (CSI) at the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) [13] and the Ituiex Chemicus Registry System (ICRS) as well as the Crossbow System of Imperial Chemical Industries (ICl). With the introduction of connection tables in the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) in 1965 and the advent of molecular editors in the 1970s, which directly produced connection tables, the WLN lost its importance. 

This tutorial describes briefly some of the search capabilities possible with Cheminform RX and MDL" ISIS used as the retrieval system. In this tutorial, the CIRX database. of the years 1992-1996 arc used, containing altogether 334 855 reactions.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. Bmker s database, designed for use with its spectrophotometers, contains 20,000 C-nmr and H-nmr, as weU as a combined nmr-ms database (66). Sadder Laboratories markets a PC-based system that can search its coUection of 30,000 C-nmr spectra by substmcture as weU as by peak assignments and by fiiU spectmm (64). Other databases include one by Varian and a CD-ROM system containing polymer spectra produced by Tsukuba University, Japan. CSEARCH, a system developed at the University of Vieima by Robien, searches a database of almost 16,000 C-nmr. Molecular Design Limited (MDL) has adapted the Robien database to be searched in the MACCS and ISIS graphical display and search environment (63). Projects are under way to link the MDL system with the Sadder Hbrary and its unique search capabiHties. 

Private (EPA) Databases. The U.S. EPA maintains a Hst of approximately 600 current information systems, as weU as some of the models and databases used within the organi2ation. The Hst is pubHshed in Information Systems Inventoy (ISI) which is updated yearly and maintained by the Information Management and Services Division of the Office of Information Resources Management (109). ISI Hsts the system name and acronym, system level, responsible organi2ation, contact person, legislative authorities, database descriptors, access information, hardware and software, system abstract, and keywords. 

ISI is available in hard copy and electronically at EPA s headquarters and regional Hbraries, and through the National Technical Information Service (NTIS). The electronic form may be installed on IBM PC-compatible computers or placed on local area networks, and mn under Microsoft WINDOWS or WordPerfect s Library program. The Macintosh version is no longer available. The 1993 update will include the ISI hardcopy, PC disks, and the PC system user manual. EPA also pubHshes ACCESS EPA, which provides sources of information, databases, and pubHcations within the EPA. Chapter 5 of that pubhcation includes important environmental databases in air and soHd waste, pesticides and toxic substances, water, and cross-program (110). EPA also provides databases accessible through EPA Hbraries, which describe the private EPA and commercial databases available to Hbrary users (111). 

The first system designed to perform these basics was developed in 1989 [2]. In early 1990, a first version of 5000 entries was made available to the scientific community on an IBM PC DOS-based program ChemBase. Now, some 10 years later, the database has increased to several tens of thousands of entries, and the entire system can be searched with the powerful ISIS software [3] as rapidly as it was searched on the old computer systems. 

This initial medicinal chemistry ELN was followed into the market by products such as the Arthur suite from Synthematix and the iELN system from Intellichem (both since acquired by Symyx), which were more oriented at reaction planning and process chemistry. The heavyweight of the traditional cheminformatics companies, Elsevier MDL, also released a system, called Elan, which combined a Word-based front end with their well-known ISIS chemical technology on the back end (Fig. 9.3).

Reaction control is temperature-based, with the system trying to attain the adjusted maximum temperature as rapidly as possible. When employing polar reaction mixtures with a high level of absorption, the output power can be limited to a maximum of 150 W to avoid overheating of the sample. The instmments of the Emrys series come with a comprehensive software package for the creation of protocols, including an ISIS draw surface for graphical description of the reactions. 

New promising designs have been proposed such as the one under an extensive industrial study on plate IHX to develop fabrication, ISI methods and a design standard for gas reactors [51], and another plate-type design for the indirect cycle reactor plant [52]. These works demonstrate that a plate IHX would simplify integration in the primary system because of its drastically reduced size.
