Over the years, as mentioned, I followed the practice that, whenever in a specific area of my research I felt that I had substantially achieved my goals and that it was time to consider shifting my emphasis elsewhere, I wrote (or edited) a book or comprehensive review of the field. My books are listed in the Appendix for interested readers who want to obtain more information or details, as well as relevant literature references. [Pg.235]

These studies trace the evolution of penicillin investigations from microbiological curiosity through the development of increasing therapeutic utility to increasingly sophisticated chemical manipulations. This chapter will focus primarily on the chemical aspects of this area. The World Wide Web has transformed the way in which we obtain and analyze published information on proteins. What only a few years ago would take days or weeks and require the use of expensive computer workstations can now be achieved in a few minutes or hours using personal computers, both PCs and Macintosh, connected to the internet. The Web contains hundreds of sites of Interest to molecular biologists, many of which are listed in Pedro s BioMolecular Research Tools (http // www.fmi.ch/biology/research tools.html). Many sites provide free access to databases that make it very easy to obtain information on structurally related proteins, the amino acid sequences of homologous proteins, relevant literature references, medical information and metabolic pathways. This development has opened up new opportunities for even non-specialists to view and manipulate a structure of interest or to carry out amino-acid sequence comparisons, and one can now rapidly obtain an overview of a particular area of molecular biology. We shall here describe some Web sites that are of interest from a structural point of view. Since the OELs provide the basis for ventilation requirements, an astute designer tries to find out how secure the OELs of the chemicals which will be used in the plant he or she is planning. In this chapter we will discuss the results of the studies of the kinetics of some systems of consecutive, parallel or parallel-consecutive heterogeneous catalytic reactions performed in our laboratory. As the catalytic transformations of such types (and, in general, all the stoichiometrically not simple reactions) are frequently encountered in chemical practice, they were the subject of investigation from a variety of aspects. Many studies have not been aimed, however, at investigating the kinetics of these transformations at all, while a number of others present only the more or less accurately measured concentration-time or concentration-concentration curves, without any detailed analysis or quantitative kinetic interpretation. The major effort in the quantitative description of the kinetics of coupled catalytic reactions is associated with the pioneer work of Jungers and his school, based on their extensive experimental material 17-20, 87, 48, 59-61). At present, there are so many studies in the field of stoichiometrically not simple reactions that it is not possible, or even reasonable, to present their full account in this article. We will therefore mention only a limited number in order for the reader to obtain at least some brief information on the relevant literature. Some of these studies were already discussed in Section II from the point of view of the approach to kinetic analysis. Here we would like to present instead the types of reaction systems the kinetics of which were studied experimentally. [Pg.22]

Many investigations of the decompositions of coordination compounds have been concerned with the qualitative identification of the steps involved, characterization of any intermediates formed and comparisons of reactivities of related salts containing systematically varied constituents. Tetravalent silicon is the only structural feature in all silicon sources in nature, e.g. the silicates and silica even elemental silicon exhibits tetravalency. Tetravalent silicon is considered to be an ana-logon to its group 14 homologue carbon and in fact there are a lot of similarities in the chemistry of both elements. Furthermore, silicon is tetravalent in all industrially used compounds, e.g. silanes, polymers, ceramics, and fumed silica. Also the reactions of subvalent and / or low coordinated silicon compounds normally lead back to tetravalent silicon species. It is therefore not surprising that more than 90% of the relevant literature deals with tetravalent silicon. The following examples illustrate why "ordinary" tetravalent silicon is still an attractive field for research activities Simple and small tetravalent silicon compounds - sometimes very difficult to synthesize - are used by theoreticians and preparative chemists as model compounds for a deeper insight into structural features and the study of the reactivity influenced by different substituents on the silicon center.
