Medline covers primarily biomedical literature, containing more than 13 million citations (October, 2002) of articles from more than 4600 journals published since 1958 [18]. The database covers basic biomedical research, clinical sciences, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, pre-clinical sciences, and life science. Medline, a subset of PubMed, is a bibliographic database produced by the US Nationcil Library of Medicine (NLM). The database is available free of charge via SciFinder Scholar or PubMed [19]. 

Interest. The interest for eaeh year must be calculated for the type of loan expected. The interest rate can be obtained from the company s financial section, recent loan history, or the literature. The Wall Street Journal publishes the weekly interest rates for several borrowings. The company s interest rate will probably be the banks prime rate, or slightly higher. 

There is now an immense range of scientific Journals, broad, narrow and in-between, to serve the great range of materials. The journals published by the many professional societies have encountered increasing competition from the many published by commercial publishers, but those, in turn, are now under severe pressure because of a growing librarians revolt against subscription prices that rise much faster than general inflation.

There are, at present, eleven operations research societies in different countries. There is also an International Federation of Operations Research Societies (IFORS). In addition to the journals published by these societies, a journal called International Abstracts in Operations Research has made its appearance. 

Once the complete title is known, the journal can easily be obtained if it is in the library customarily used by the chemist. If not, one must use another library, and the next step is to find out which libraries carry the journal. CASSI answers this question too, since it carries a list of some 360 libraries in the United States and other countries, and for each journal it tells which of these libraries carries it, and furthermore, if the holdings are incomplete, which volumes of that journal are carried by each library. It may be possible to visit the closest library personally. If not, a copy of the article can usually be obtained through interlibrary loan. The CASSI also includes lists of journal publishers, sales agents, and document depositories. Orders for documents can be placed by mail, telephone. Telex, fax, or online through STN or other services. 

MEDLINE contains bibliographic citations and author abstracts from more than 5000 biomedical journals published in the United States and 80 other countries. The database contains over 15 million citations datingbackto the mid-1950s.

Before proceeding one needs to mention Chemical Abstracts (CA), a journal published by the American Chemical Society, that abstracts the world s chemical hterature and has developed its own nomenclature rules. The CA rules are generally very close to the IUPAC rules, but there are some differences. Most of the differences are not important at the level of the discussions in this book. One difference that needs to be mentioned is the placement of locants. CA does not place locants immediately before the part of the name to which they apply. Thus, the CA name for the first subunit in XV is 2,4-pyridinediyl instead of pyridine-...
