Coal mines

In the coal-mining industry, more than 300 mines are operated in three coal-mining regions Ukraine produces only 5 5 million tons of its own oil, but the ramified network of oil pipelines supports the operation of 10 petroleum plants. The Ukrainian gas pipelines transport the Russian gas to Central and Western Europe. [Pg.966]

Acetamide [60-35-5] C2H NO, mol wt 59.07, is a white, odorless, hygroscopic soHd derived from acetic acid and ammonia. The stable crystalline habit is trigonal the metastable is orthorhombic. The melt is a solvent for organic substances it is used ia electrochemistry and organic synthesis. Pure acetamide has a bitter taste. Unknown impurities, possibly derived from acetonitrile, cause its mousy odor (1). It is found ia coal mine waste dumps (2). [Pg.73]

Ammonium nitrate-based explosives account for about 97% of total U.S. industrial explosive consumption. Coal mining in the United States formed about 65—68% of the demand for explosives in 1991. The remaining uses were quarrying and nonmetal mining, 15% metal mining, 10% constmction, 7% miscellaneous uses, 3—4%. The properties of ammonium nitrate are given in Table 18 (173,239—242). [Pg.23]

The KDF filter was first tested in prototype on a coal mine in northern Germany. It was installed in parallel with existing vacuum filters and it produced filter cakes consistendy lower in moisture content by 5 to 7% than the vacuum filters. Two production models have been installed and operated on a coal mine in Belgium. The filter is controlled by a specially developed computer system this consists of two computers, one monitoring the function of the filter and all of the detection devices installed, and the other controlling the filtration process. The system allows optimization of the performance, automatic start-up or shut-down, and can be integrated into the control system of the whole coal washing plant. [Pg.406]

Water-in-oil emulsions are used as fire-resistant hydrauhc fluids to replace petroleum hydrauhc fluids in general industry, coal mines, and rolling mills where a fire ha2ard exists (1). [Pg.271]

Industrial Wastewater Treatment. Industrial wastewaters require different treatments depending on their sources. Plating waste contains toxic metals that are precipitated and insolubiHzed with lime (see Electroplating). Iron and other heavy metals are also precipitated from waste-pidde Hquor, which requires acid neutralization. Akin to pickle Hquor is the concentrated sulfuric acid waste, high in iron, that accumulates in smokeless powder ordinance and chemical plants. Lime is also useful in clarifying wastes from textile dyeworks and paper pulp mills and a wide variety of other wastes. Effluents from active and abandoned coal mines also have a high sulfuric acid and iron oxide content because of the presence of pyrite in coal. [Pg.178]

Coal-Mine Dusting. A steady market for pulverized limestone is ia dusting coal mines with a noncombustible mineral dust as a federally mandated mine safety requirement. Of aU mineral dusts, limestone is by far the most commonly used (60—75% 0.074 mm (200 mesh)). Consumption ia 1991 was... [Pg.179]

The former Soviet Union constmcted a 262-km, 508-mm dia experimental coal slurry line between the Belovo open-pit coal mine in Siberia s Kuznets basin to an electric power plant at Novosibirsk, using technology developed by Snamprogetti. Testing began in late 1989 and tentative plans call for constmction of two much larger slurry pipelines, each 3000-km long, with capacity to move a total of 33 x 10 t/yr to industrialized areas near the Ural Mountains (27,33). [Pg.48]

Constmction of new power plants in the coal region of the western United States presents serious problems in states whose laws dictate zero effluent. In these plants, cooling-tower water withdrawn from rivers cannot be returned to them. In these situations, cooling-tower effluent is purified by distillation (vapor-compression plants have predominated) and by a combination of distillation and membrane technology. The converted water then is used as boiler feedwater the plant blowdown (effluent) is evaporated from open-air lined pools, and pool sediment is periodically buried back in the coal mine with the flue ashes. [Pg.238]

Montan Wax. Montan wax [8002-53-7] is derived by solvent extraction of lignite (qv). The earliest production on a commercial scale was in Germany during the latter half of the nineteenth century, and Germany continues to supply the majority of the world s production of montan wax. Montan wax production at Amsdorf is part of a massive coal-mining operation from a continuous vein and raw material is expected to last for decades. Montan wax is also produced in the United States. Imports of montan wax into the United States for the years 1990—1995 are Hsted in Table 1. Germany suppHes over 80% of the montan wax imported into the United States (3). [Pg.315]

Coal mining has been a relatively dangerous occupation (2,91—93). During the period from 1961—1967 the average fataUty rate in the United States for each million person hours worked was 1.05. In the seven years after the passage of the Eederal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, the average fatahty rate decreased to 0.58, and by 1989 the rate was 0.25 (2). [Pg.233]

Drainage. Some mines are located beneath subsurface streams, or the coal seams may be aquifers. These mines may become flooded if not continually pumped. In Peimsylvania anthracite mines as much as 30 tons of water maybe pumped for each ton of coal mined (94). [Pg.233]

The Eederal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act set standards for mine ventilation, roof support, coal dust concentrations levels, mine inspections, and equipment. As a part of this comprehensive act, miners must receive medical examinations at employer expense, and payments are made from the U.S. government to miners who caimot work because of black lung disease. [Pg.233]

For by-product coke ovens, it is general practice to blend two or more types of coals that have complimentary technical as well as economic characteristics. Because most by-product coke plants are located near the large industrial users of the coke and by-products, coals usually have to be transported from the coal mines to the coke plants. Thus coal blends are designed on integration of coke quaUty needs, by-product quaUty needs, coal costs, transportation costs, impacts of productivity, and impacts on the coke ovens themselves. The physical behavior of coal blends during coking can damage coke ovens. [Pg.243]

Solvent-Refined Coal (SRC) This processing concept was initiated by the Pittsburgh Midway Coal Mining Co. in the early 1960s. The SRC-I process operating mode is designed to produce a solid fuel for utility applications. Typical operating conditions and product yields for SRC-I are shown in Table 27-14. [Pg.2373]

Note Some applications creating hazardous condilions are petrochemical or fertilizer plants, refineries, coal mines etc., where inflammable gases and volatile liquids are handled, processed and stored. [Pg.179]

The air pollution problems associated with combustion of coal are of major concern. These problems generally occur away from the coal mine. The problems of atmospheric emissions due to mining, cleaning, handling, and transportation of coal from the mine to the user are of lesser sigruficance as far as the overall air pollution problems are concerned. Whenever coal is handled, particulate emission becomes a problem. The emissions can be either coal dust or inorganic inclusions. Control of these emissions can be relatively expensive if the coal storage and transfer facilities are located near residential areas. [Pg.87]

Keep in mind rail tariff breaks for numbers of cars in a string so that the ability to handle the required numbers can be provided. If the operation is large enough, as for large coal mining operations, unit trains (100 cars) are used. [Pg.229]

General 1. Use cokeless iron- and steel-making processes, such as the direct reduction process, to eliminate the need to manufacture coke. 2. Use beneficiation (preferably at the coal mine) and blending processes that improve the quality of coal feed to produce coke of desired quality and reduce emissions of sulfur oxides and other pollutants. [Pg.74]
