The pre-processing concepts have been a more recent development of substructure searching systems. These approaches have become popular since the mid-1980s, when the cost of the storage devices (hard disks and CD-ROMs) decreased. [Pg.298]

An adsorbent attracts molecules from the gas, the molecules become concentrated on the surface of the adsorbent, and are removed from the gas phase. Many process concepts have been developed to allow the efficient contact of feed gas mixtures with adsorbents to carry out desired separations and to allow efficient regeneration of the adsorbent for subsequent reuse. In nonregenerative appHcations, the adsorbent is used only once and is not regenerated. [Pg.269]

Process Concepts. Hybrid systems involving gas-phase adsorption coupled with catalytic processes and with other separations processes (especially distillation and membrane systems) will be developed to take advantage of the unique features of each. In contrast to trace impurity removal, the use of adsorption for bulk separation in the liquid phase on a commercial scale is a relatively recent development. The first commercial operation occurred in 1964 with the advent of the UOP Molex process for recovery of high purity / -paraffins (6—8). Since that time, bulk adsorptive separation of liquids has been used to solve a broad range of problems, including individual isomer separations and class separations. The commercial availability of synthetic molecular sieves and ion-exchange resins and the development of novel process concepts have been the two significant factors in the success of these processes. This article is devoted mainly to the theory and operation of these Hquid-phase bulk adsorptive separation processes. [Pg.291]

Process Concept The application of a direct elecdric field of appropriate polarity when filtering should cause a net charged-particle migration relative to the filter medium (electrophoresis). The same direct electric field can also be used to cause a net fluid flow relative to the pores in a fixed filter cake or filter medium (electroosmosis). Solvent-Refined Coal (SRC) This processing concept was initiated by the Pittsburgh Midway Coal Mining Co. in the early 1960s. In this case, the co-solvent dosage rate is programmed in order to control the transient level of supersaturation in an effort to improve on the product crystal size distribution from simply dumping in all the solvent at the start of the batch. An experimental crystallizer within which a programmed microcomputer determines the set point of a variable speed-dosing pump is shown in Figure 7.7. In order to overcome these problems, the flow schemes as shown in Figures 1 and 2 were developed. These incorporate the use of Kerr-McGee Corporation s Critical Solvent Deashing and Fractionation Process (CSD) for recovery of the SRC. The Kerr-McGee Process adds extra flexibility since this process can recover heavy solvent for recycle, which is not recoverable by vacuum distillation. EPRI contracted with Conoco Coal Development Company (CCDC) and Kerr-McGee Corporation in 1977-1978 to test these process concepts on continuous bench-scale units. A complementary effort would be made at the Wilsonville Pilot Plant under joint sponsorship by EPRI, DOE, and Kerr-McGee Corporation. This paper presents some of the initial findings. [Pg.192]

In terms of the process, very little has been achieved.
