Mining ventilation

The Eederal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act set standards for mine ventilation, roof support, coal dust concentrations levels, mine inspections, and equipment. As a part of this comprehensive act, miners must receive medical examinations at employer expense, and payments are made from the U.S. government to miners who caimot work because of black lung disease.

In emergency situations, where a mine ventilation system is compromised and underground fires are releasing dangerous quantities of CO into the mine atmosphere, chemical oxidation of the CO to less-harmful C02 is the usual practice. This is achieved using a self-rescuer apparatus, which is essentially a mask, into which the mine atmosphere is drawn by the respiration of the wearer. As mine atmosphere enters the self rescuer it passes over a CuMn204 catalyst (known as Hopcalite see Veprek el al. 1986), which expedites the oxidation of CO to C02. Normally, self-rescuers contain sufficient Hopcalite to allow for 60 to 90 minutes of use, which will generally be sufficient time to allow the wearer to escape from the mine, or at least to reach a secure fresh air base where the ventilation system continues to operate.

Actual tests on a multiblade fan for mine ventilation showed that, when fitted with a chimney whose larger end was twice the cutoff area and whose sides had a taper of 8 deg. from the axis, the volumetric capacity was increased 12 per cent when operating against a given static pressure and at a given number of revolutions per minute, horsepower, however, increased only 5 per cent.

Argillaceous rock may also dehydrate. The clay formation under investigation in Italy contains 20 to 25 percent water and will lose most of it at llO C. Moreover, these formations will alter their mechanical properties by dehydration as well as by additional moisture absorption, which may even be caused by mine ventilation. An advantage of clay is its high ion-exchange capacity. This property can also be employed to add safety to the waste repository when a formation is chosen where the layers overlying the actual host rock are argillaceous. 

ABSTRACT Wind tunnel is defined to connect the main fan and shaft tunnel. Wind tunnel ventilation resistance has always been a big problem of mine ventilation resistance. This article analyses measured the ventilation resistance of many wind tunnels. Based on the theoretical analysis about reasons, it is concluded that there are many reasons contributing to a larger ventilation resistance, at the same time it puts forward the improvement to decrease the ventilation resistance, save energies and achieve good economic benefits. 

Getting rid of obstacles to keep air ways clear and make the total resistance of wind tunnel less than 200 Pa and 10% of total resistance of all mine ventilation system.

ABSTRACT Determination of resistance of mine ventilation system is an important part of safety production of coal mine and ventilation safety management, the size of the resistance directly influence the effect of the mine ventilation. In order to understand the No. 4 Mine of Pingdingshan Coal Field mine ventilation resistance and its distribution, the optimization of mine ventilation system, selected major determinations, based on the basis of the barometer method for determination of resistance to the mine, and according to the results of mine ventilation system are analyzed. 

Currently, the determination of mine ventilation resistance in common use precision digital barometer. 

Determination method is mainly divided into two point method and synchronization method. Using the method of base point to determine the mine ventilation resistance, it has the characteristics of time saving, labor saving, fast speed, the more commonly used method is the method of base point. Point method is that a barometer is placed in well or at a point well, at a certain time measured pressure reading and record the time of determination and the changes of surface and atmospheric pressure, which is to correct of pressure data of downhole measurement Another barometer meter air pressure numerical along pre-selected route by point and records the time measurement. 

Through the calculation, the three shaft system errors are within the allowable error less than 5%, basically conforms to the mine ventilation reality, the results can be used for the ventilation system transformation. 

To further strengthen the management of mine ventilation technology, improve the basic technical work, improve the whole level of management of one ventilation and three prevention .

Meanwhile, part of heat pump units draw heat from buildings to be supplied for air-conditioners. The drawl waste heat could be carried away through mine ventilation or drainage. See Figure 1 for heat balance. 

In order to reasonably, effectively and economically lower the temperature in the working face and to fully utilize the technology of mining, ventilation and cooling at the same time, artificial refrigeration measures must be taken to improve the underground working environment, to protect miners health and to improve labor productivity.
